Abbott presided over a large attendance and extended a hearty welcome to the visitors. The evening proved highly successful, and tho musical items were enjoyed by an. The Christian Brothers, who intend opening a day school in Oamaru in the near future, are having extensive alterations and additions made to the old St. Patricks School, which will, when completed, bo most modern and up to date in ail respects. OAMARU PIGEON CLUB. The Oamaru Pigeon Flying Club flow a .race from Invercargill last Saturday, * birds, representing four lofts, competed. Tho weather was fine, but there was a strong head wind, considering which good times were recorded. Mr T. Genge’s Anstcxnrat was first with an average speed of 1075yds Ift per minute. Messrs Webb brother? Cherrio (1072yds lOin) and Mr T. Wilsons Storm (1060yds 2in) secured second and third places respectively. MINIATURE SHOOTING. The following are the highest scores for tho week at the Weston Club:—G. Henderson £O, Barnard 79, Lancy 78, Park 78, M'Vcigh 77, B. Campbell 76. Wates 75, West 74. 11. Stevenson 74, Falloon 73, Patterson 73. Tho following team will shoot match with Enfield on Saturday evening: Smith, Falloon, Park, Lancy, Patterson, Henderson, Barnard, West, M Weigh, R Campbell, Wates, H. Stevenson. The cadets held their weekly shoot on Wednesday evening. R. Morris won the button for the highest score off the rifle, and A. Larsen the handicap button. Following are the scores: —K. Smith, 63, 10, 73; W. Tonkin, 56, 15, 71. HAMPDEN ATHEN/EUM. Tile Athenasum Library has taken a new lease of life. After having been for so long closed up it was no more than a recollection to many, while to others its former existence was not even suspected. Lately, however, an energetic committee has revived the institution. Two rooms in the hall have been renovated, new bookshelves erected, and the books overhauled and catalogued. New volumes are to be bought, and it is hoped that the supply will be still further augmented on the opening day. This is to take the form of a book afternoon in the hall, and residents and others interested are invited to bring a book or books as a donation. A SOCIAL. A most successful congregational social was held in the Columba Hall on Wednesday evening. The hall, which had been specially decorated, presented a picturesque appearance. An excellent and varied musical programme was contributed by the following:—Miss G. Moffatt (pianoforte solo), Messrs Hinkley, Tonkin, and Rodger (male choir). Miss Hesketh and Mrs Campbell (solos), Mesdames Doig, Walton, and Simpson (play reading). During the evening, Mr A. Hamilton (treasurer) announced that the special offering on Sunday amounted to £365, which, he said, was a striking tribute to the loyalty and generosity of the congregation, which during the last few years had contributed a large amount towards the purchase of the church property. On the motion of Mr K. D. Meyer, a vote of thanks was accorded those who had supplied supper and decorated the hall, and also to those who had assisted towards the success of the evening. “ THE BELLE OF NEW YORK.” The preparations for the Oamaru Operatic Society’s production of “ The Belle of New York ” are now in full swing. At a rehearsal held last evening it was quite evident that the members, both principals and chorus, are being put through a very efficient training. The musical numbers, which are exceedingly bright and catchy (under the direction of Mr George Whale), arc being rendered splendidly. The keenness of the members and tho attention shown to every detail reflects a great credit on the producer (Mr Stanley Hook), who has undoubtedly obtained the. confidence of every artist. The dancing and ballets, under the central of Misses Shaw and Bee, will undoubtedly be a feature. The scenery and dressing effects are excellent. The dates of production are November 1 to 5 inclusive. Hunter; a Salvation Lassie, Betty Butterlie Id. ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY. The monthly meeting of the Acclimatisation Society was held last evening. Mr L. Sumpter presided over an attendance of eight members. Mr C. H. Swinard was granted permission to erect a hut on the Waitaki bridge reserve, the allocation of the plot to bo left to the Reserves Committee. It was decided to liberate 12,000 rainbow trout in Lake Ohnu and 25,000 brown trout, in the Welcome Creek, and a , similar number in the Arakino River. ■The Department of Internal Affairs advised that it had agreed that the protection be removed from red deer m tho I Waitaki deer forest, but that it be reimposed during the months of M-arch.

ACTIVITIES OF THE DISTRICT.

April and May, tho stalking season to be from the middle of April to tho middle of May, thus causing a season of six weeks immediately prior to tho opening of the stalking season, during which no red deer could be shot. Mr Keen reported that ho had arranged with the contractor to have the well at the VVaitaki bridge reserve in working order prior to tho opening of the \\ aitaki season. Thirty-six poplars, 24 macrocarpa and 160 pines had been planted on tno Waitaki reserve. BOATING CLUB. The annual meeting of the Oamaru Boating Club was held last evening. Mr M K. M'Culloch presided over a good attendance of members. Tho annual report and balance sheet were read and adopted. It was decided that the annual subscription to the Otago Rowing Club be left to the incoming committee. Ino meeting resolved to allow high school boys to become members of the club at a reduced subscription. The election of officebearers for tho ensuing year resulted ns follows Patron, Mr R. K.
