INSTITUTE OF PACIFIC RELATIONS.
More than two years have now elapsed since the project of an Institute of Pacific Relations was first mooted, and the experience gained at, two conferences held in Honolulu lias justified the belief that solid advantages would bo the result of meetings of representatives of all the peoples interested in tho Facile, without the hampering influence of official responsibilities. At tho 1927 conference Great Britain was represented, among others, by Mr Lionel Curtis, formerly closely connected with the Round Table, and Sir Frederick White, formerly President of tho Indian Legislative Assembly. New Zealand has obvious interests in the solution of the problems of tho Pacific, and a strong branch of tho institute lias been organised with Sir James Allen, as chairman, and Dr Scholefield, tho parliamentary librarian, as secretary. Dr Condliffo, formerly of Canterbury College, is now research secretary at Honolulu, and to the last conference Now Zealand sent representatives who made a worthy contribution io its activities. Mr Walter Nash, secretary of tho Now Zealand Labour Party, was leader of tho delegation, and with him wore associated Dr Peter Ruck, the Rev. W. Mawson, formerly a missionary in China, and Mr Cooker, a well-known Auckland lawyer. An organisation with groups in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch has been created, but so far no Dunedin group has been definitely constituted. A meeting has been called for this evening in the University Club room to bring Dunedin into lino with the other main centres, when Mr Nash will give an account of the work of the last conference.
