LICENSEE FINED.

BETTING AS A SIDELINE. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, October 6. Michael Burke, aged 28, the licensee of the City Hotel, was to-day fined £2O for using the premises as a common gaming house. It was stated for the defendant that he received only £8 a week as manager of tho hotel, and had foolishly tried to supplement this by taking bets. Ho acted only as agent, and tho amounts were small. Ho was losing his license, and had agreed to transfer. Tho Magistrate, in imposing the fine, said that the defendant must have known tlie risk he was running.
