"ZELANDIA."
CONFUSING TRADE NAMES.
(Special to Daily .Limes.) AUCKLAND, September 12. The views of the Argentine Dairy Association upon protests which have been made against the use of the trade name “Zelandia,” which it had been suggested confuses South American with New Zealand dairy produce, have been conveyed to Mr F. S. Battley. Argentine \ icc-Uonsul at Auckland, by the association named. It is pointed out that the name, a Diiteli one was registered many years ago, and for’a long period "Zelandia” has boon tlie brand under which S. A. Elowson and Wester. Ltd., have been selling dairy produce. The chairman of that company is vice-chairman ot the Argentine Dairy Association. The company’s manager, Mr Battley, is informed, would have no objection to abandoning the trade mark if that is desired by the interests which consider it conflicts with New Zealand selling brands. It was unthinkable, said the Argentine body, that New Zealand exporters could believe that such nn oldestablished and highly-reputable firm as Elowson and Wester would resort to the use of a copy trade name to try and gam an advantage on the market. On the contrary, like most Argentine firms, that in question was trying to better its position on thn London market by the only lawful methods—bettering the quality of its export, ensuring uniformity of type, and organising sales. it had suffered too much by past, errors to resort, now to fraudulent means to conquer the market.
’Die letter, dated Buenos Aires, July S, is, Mr Battley stated last, night, nn answer to statements concerning _ the _ word “ Zelandia,” which were published in the press of New Zealand. Copies of reports appearing on the matter were forwarded to the Argentine Dairy Association and inspired the explanation forwarded to the Vice-Consul.
