WOMAN DETECTIVE.

800 SHOP THIEVES CAUGHT. It came to light in a shoplifting case heard at Wood Green recently (says a London paper) that a woman mivate detective who is employed by several firm has brought to book in all 800 shop thieves. The detective, Miss Gertrude Hunter, said she watched Mary Beck, of Tottenham. a married woman, and her 14-year-old daughter, in some stores. The child showed the articles to her mother. The mother nodded, and the girl put the articles in a bag. Charged with stealing articles of the value of £1 15s, the mother blamed the child and the child said: “Don’t blame mummic. I took nil the tilings.” Both mother and daughter had borne good characters hitherto. The child was discharged, and the mother fined £l2.
