NANKING UNDER FIRE
EVACUATED BY SOUTHERNERS. PANIC AMONG INHABITANTS. (Pres» Association—By Telegraph—Copyright ) SHANGHAI, August 29. Owing to the intense bombardment of Nanking by Northern artillery from Pukow, Nanking has been almost completely evacuated by the Southerners, who have taken up positions behind the city. The Northerners staged a second attempt to cross the Yangtse River, 10,000 going over covered by a barrage. They landed at Lungtan, where they were instantly attacked by the Southerners and compelled to retire, owing to the unexpected appearance in the vicinity of two Southern warships, which commenced bombarding them during the landing. The roar of cannon is constantly heard in Nanking, the inhabitants of which are in a state of panic. Shells are falling indiscriminately, wrecking many homes. The Northerners are still unable to obtain proper means of transport in order to cross the Yangtse and attack Nanking in full strength.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
