FOOTBALL AND PEACE.
CEMENTING FRIENDSHIPS
It has always been argued with a p- i deal of force that the best way to eem: it international friendship is to enoourc;;; international sport (says a correspondent of Headway, a magazine which supports the work of the League of Nations), borne colour is lent to the theory by the Rugby match played between France and Germany at Paris on April 17. It is the first time this event has taken place since 1900, and France, putting its best available team into the field, won bv 30 points to 5. That result was almost as satisfactory to the Germans as to the French; for Rugby football has nothing like the hold in Germany as it haa tn France or Great Britain or Ireland. AA 7 hat did matter was the extraordinary cordiality shown by the spectators and the Bports : raanshin of the players on both sides: Some 30,000 spectators were present, and the German black, red. and gold flag w-s flown side by side with the French tri ■< over the stands. The German try. wlv ;
was converted, was scored inst before tic. c, and appears to have evoked warm and universal applause as any one of the French scores. A return match is to Ire played in Germany next year.
