RAID ON CHINESE CAFE
CHARGES AGAINST OCCUPANTS. SUBSTANTIAL FINES IMPOSED. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, June 29. Sunday’s raid by detectives, who visited the Nanking Cafe and chop-suey shop in Grey street, and arrested 66 Chinese on various charges, has swelled tho consolidated fund to tl]o extent of £3OO. Of the 66 arrested, 42 wore dealt with on Monday morning, when £ll6 was levied in fines. Tho other _24 came before tho Police Court thi’e morning, when tho throe principals wore each fined £SO, and 17 others found on tho premises £2 each. This makes a total of £3OO in fines, plus police expenses, ordered to be paid. Fong Hung was charged with wilfully permitting premises to be used as a common gaming-house, and Ah Wing and Ah Leo with using premises as a common gaminghouse. Mr Tong appeared for Fong Hung, who pleaded guilty. Ah Lee also pleaded guilty. Mr Tong admitted that Hung was the keeper of the house, also that fan tap and dominoes were games of chance, but not mah jong. Fong Hung was fined £SO, and Ah, Wing a similar amount. Ah Lee also had to contribute £SO to tho consolidated fund.
