FIRES.

BLAZE AT NAPIER. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DONE. (Peb United Peess Association.) NAPIER, May 17. Damage to the extent of nearly £IO,OOO resulted from a fire which broke out in the premises of Darby’s Stores (Ltd.), fancy goods retailers, early this evening. The shop is situtaed in the centre of Hasting street. The outbreak was seen within a quarter of an hour after closing time, an<3 then had a strong hold. The flames spread through the building with remarkable rapidity, and quickly consumed practically the whole stock, valued at about £7OOO. During the last few days a start had been made to remove to new premises, and it was the intention to vacate the present shop at the end of the month. The building was of brick, two storeys high, and. the interior suffered considerably. Only slight damage was done to the" adjoining buildings. The insurance on the building and fittings was £3500, which was distributed in the Guardian, . Phoenix, and United offices. The insurances on the stock were reduced by £2OOO just a month ago on account of the quantity on hand at the time having been somewhat less than usual. A GARAGE DESTROYED. (Peb United Press Association.) GISBORNE, May 17. Lovell's motor garage at Motu was destroyed bv fire. The damage is estimated at £SOO.
