HEAVY FIGHTING REPORTED. A CONFUSED SITUATION. (Press association—By Telegraph—Copyright.) SHANGHAI, May 16. Marshal Chang Tso-lin's forces, with numerous allies, are steadily overpowering the opposition and driving it towards Hankow'. A British wireless confirms the report of the recapture of Pukow by the Southerners without fighting. Fighting is occurring on half a dozen fronts from Nanking to Hankow. The situation is most confusing.—A. and N.Z. Cable. JAPANESE NAVAL FORCE. AUGMENTED BY NEW SQUADRON,! TOKIO, May 16. The navy is forming a second squadron for use in Chinese waters, consisting of tw'o cruisers and destroyers. It is significant that a hospital ship is attached to the squadron. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
