FALSE PRETENCES.

YOUNG WOMAN PLEADS GUILTY,

DESCRIBED AS ADVENTURESS

Nina Mary Lang, a young woman, who was described by Chief Detective Cameron as “something of an was charged at the City Police Court yesterday morning, before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., with obtaining goods by false pretences. The charges were: (1) That with intent to defraud she obtained a .pair of lady’s shoes valued at £1 5s from Walter Thomas Haig by falsely representing that her father owned stations at Rrversdale and Taradale; and (2) with obtaining a pair of lady's gloves and a frock valued at £7 6s from Charles Tasman Lee by false representing that her father was retired and owned property at Taradale.

Defendant pleaded guilty, and elected to be dealt with summarily. Chief Detective Cameron said that defendant had told her story at the D.1.C., where she had obtained the frock .and gloves, and at Cookham House, where the shoes had been secured. She bad then gone into the country, and had been arrested at Kanfurly. The goods had been recovered, but, as they had been worn, they were of no value. The Magistrate: 1 see that she has convictions in both Christchurch and Auckland. Where is she, from?

The matron of the gaol (Mrs Rogers) said that defendant had a good home in Christchurch. She had been '-onvictcd there of tho theft of £IOO from Waidcll Bros., by whom she was employed at the time. She had collected the mail in tho morning and taken cheques, which she had cashed —nobody knew how. She had been convicted in Auckland cf an offence similar to that with which she was now charged Her parents w ere very respectable people. The Magistrate remanded def-.nd.nl until to-morrow, so that Ensign Coombs could supply him with a report.
