TIME-PAYMENT SYSTEM

CREDIT HEAVILY PLEDGED. FEDERAL TREASURER'S WARNING. (Pres? Association—By Telegraph—Copyright-) SYDNEY, May 17. (Received May 17, at 8 p.m.) Dealing with the high rate of taxation and the recurrent surpluses over his estimates, the Federal Treasurer (Dr Earle Page) said that the development of the time-payment system in Australia was proceeding at an alarming rate. It was resulting in the prospective wealth of the community being pledged for goods, many of them foreign, at a rate which could not bo forecasted. This resulted in an ever-increasing import of such luxuries as motor cars, musical instruments, and suchlike goods.
