HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE.
MOSGIEL’S MAIN STREET. AN APPLICATION REFUSED. A renewal by tho Mosgiol Borough Council of its application for the declaration as a main highway of Gordon road, which connects two sections of main higiiway, has again bcon refused by the District Highways Council (No. 17). The matter was discussed at tho meeting of tho council this week. , , ~ . , When a deputation from tho Mosgiel Borough Council had waited on tho council and asked that tho highway through tho borough bo declared a main highway, it had presented several traffic tallies, said Mr Marks. An analysis of the tallies had been left to him. The tallies, as presented, showed that 43 por cent, of the traffic through Mosgiel was foreign. Ho had examined tho tallies by, the recognised correct method of allocation, and had found tho percentage to be 33 por cent. W hile the facts did not disclose a special claim for Mosgiel, its claim was typical. 1 robably in the future the council would receive an increased grant to £l2B from the b Tho' board had intimated that it could not see its way clear to depart from, its present policy or reconsider tho Provisions of the Act so far as they related to boroughs. The board had turned down ■boroughs which had stronger claims than Mosgiel, 3 and on tho facts it could not make a special grant. At the conference to bo held 1 in Christchurch on Wednesday, some of the county representatives should urge that more consideration should be given to some of the smaller boroughs..
