AUCKLAND TRAINING NOTES

(Fkom Ode Special Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, May 17. The weather was fine this morning for training operations. The No. 2 grass track was open for galloping, and hurdles were erected on the outside of the course proper. There was some interesting schooling over both hurdles and big fences. On the flat the going was soft. There was a fair amount of galloping, but nothing of a sensational nature.

White Bird finished better than Cawnpore oyer five furlongs, the last half-mile occupying 53 3-ssec.

Wyoming was going better than Killute at the end of lour furlongs, and Star Comet, Rapoa, and Golden Krist came home over four furlongs in 54scc.

Judge’s Box shaped better than Scaramouche and a companion over the samo ground in 53sec. Lomint and Master Doon were associated in a spin over six furlongs, and after cutting out the first three in 38 2-ssec, completed tho journey in Imin 19sec. Both went well.

Glenotus (J. Sharkey), Glenlight (E. Rae), Simplicitas (R. Anderson), and Passionate (B. Pricel were sent in company over the steeplechase fences on the flat. Glenotus hud a big break at the start and finished well in front of Passionate, giving a faultless display. Passionate was jumping slowly,- and at tho first of the brush double Simplicitas made a bad effort and threw Anderson out of tho saddle, the jockey having a perious time hanging to the horse's neck boiore ho was able to crawl back into his seat.

Cui Bono (B. Price) was set a similar task and gave a splendid exhibition, never putting a foot wrong, j An outstanding feature of tho morning’s work was the great display given by Archibald (S. Henderson) in a round over five hurdles on the course proper. He was accompanied by Kamehamena (B. Price) and Glenotus (J. Sharkey). Glenotus soon commenced to tail off when the other pair set out to make the pace, and after they had all cleared tho first hurdle correctly Kamehemeha got in too close to tho second, and he also faltered at the next three, running tho last one down badly. In the meantime Archibald was taking every obstacle in his stride and w;as going very strongly at the finish, passing the post a Ion" way ahead of K-amchameha and Gleno tus° the last-named overhauling Kamo hameha, who was eased in tho stiaight. The party went over five hurdles, and from hurdlo to hurdle Archibald cut the full round out in 2min 11 a brilliant effort, which is sure to gain him a host of admirers for the Great Northern Hurdles. His jumping left nothing to bo desired. His trainer, J. Williamson, certainly has Archibald in great heart. Kawini, with 11. Olivo m the saddle, wont by himself in negotiating four hurdles from the six furlongs’ post to tho bottom of tho straight proper, and he gave an impressive display, clearing each lot of battens without trouble. It was a very smooth performance on the part of the Groat Northern’s favourite. Later, Tall Timber (E. Garrett), together with Glenlight (U. Anderson), Clockwork (R Olive), Blue Sky (J. Sharkey), and On "a Hika (A. Rutherford), was given a spin over the four hurdles on the course occasion Tall Timber gave a much better showing, and although hi? fencing was not altogether fa dtless. ho finished ,n front. Glenlight gave an mi,roved showing, while Onga Ilika went very fast for half a mile and jumped in grout -style before ho tired. He pecked liacllv at the last hurdle, and was lame when he came back. __ A motor car containing tho light-weight iockey. W. 11. Jones, and the hurdle horseman, G. Holland, who were proceeding through tho King Country on their way to the Eg inont meeting, got out of <awttrol and wont over a bank. G. Holland was

thrown out and received injuries to the muscles of his neck, which kept him out of the saddle at the Hawera gathering. Jones was more fortunate, as he escaped uninjured and was able to fulfill his riding engagements at Hawera. G. Holland has been engaged to ride Kawini in his engagements at tho Great Northern meeting, but it is expected that he will have got over the results of tho mishap before the fixture is opened. R. Olive, who has been doing a lot of schooling at Ellerslio, had tho mount on Kawini wh«m bo was worked over the hurdles this morning.

WANGANUI SCRATCHINGS

(Pep. United Press Association.) WANGANUI, May 17. Diogneso and Starshell have been scratched for all engagements at the Wanganui winter meeting.

THE KINGSTON-KAWARAU ROAD. TO THE EDITOR.

.Sip, —lt is gratifying to know that a start is to bo made with tho formation of tho Kingaton-Kawaran road, which will run along the side of tho Romarkablcs and which will place Invercargill and other southern centres in direct communication with Queenstown by road._ At the present tune intensive road-making is engaging the attention of almost every country in the world. New and formerly inaccessible localities are thus i-eii- n-e-e ’ un to the advantage of man. For this state of affairs tile automobile must of course, be held largely -esponsihle. In the universal desire for speedier end more efficient tran sport, such a forward movement becomes inevitable. It is to ho hoped that the Kingston-Kawarau road will he finished in as short a time as is consistent with a first-class job.—l am, etc..
