A FIREMAN DROWNED.
ALLEGATIONS BY CREW. DELAY IN LAUNCHING OF LIFEBOAT SUGGESTED. (Pee United Pbess Association.) AUCKLAND, May 3. A statement signed by several members of the crew of the trawler Countess alleges that the fouling of some gear delayed the launching of the lifeboat on Friday, when a fireman. T. S. Veale, fell overboard and was drowned. They state that the boat covers, too, were in some instances nailed down, and could not be removed without using a hammer. Mr O’Shea, assistant secretary to the Seamen’s Union, says that the incident is another powerful argument for inclusion in the Shipping- and Seamen’s Act of a rigid survey of steamers’ life-saving appartus. The superintendent engineer of the owners, Messrs Sandford (Ltd), says that the Countess was regularly inspected by the port deck surveyors. Six months ago the vessel was recertificated after a test which involved the launching of the lifeboats, when no difficulty was experienced. It was not customary in Sandfords’ fleet to have the boat covers hailed. All the seamen employed by the firm were fully qualified men.
