MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of die West Har? hour Borough Council was held last oven; ing and was attended by the retiring Mayor (Mr H. E. MoUer), Mr J. M. Fraeer (the newly-appointed Mayor), Crs T. H. .Her ridge. C. M. French, J.- M. Ear, J. T. Downes, J. W. H. Clarke, G. W. C Macdonald, J. Robb, and G. Young. Mr Moller said that it was ax pleasure to welcome all the old councillors back to the table. It showed that the ratepayer? had every confidence in the men selected to control the affairs of the district. He extended a welcome to Cr G. Young, the representative of the St. I»onard’s ward. Mr Moller said that if the council carried out its duties in the future as it had done in the past, then every man and also every ratepayer would have every reason tp be well satisfied. Cr G. Young signed the declaration and took his seat at the table.
REQUESTS FROM ST. LEONARDS, The Secretary of the Burkes-St. Leonard’? Progressive League wrote thanking the council for appointing a ranger for the Burkes, St. Leonards, and Sawyer's Bay districts. It was hoped that the council’s action w r ould be the means of abating the wandering cattle nuisance. It was pointed out that a number of street lamps were urgently - required in the district, and the council was asked to install these_ at necessary points. A number of complaints had been%lodged in regard to the missing rails around the lagoon at St. Leonards. It was stated that the men employed by the Public Works Department had _ removed several rails during their These had not been replaced, and as the lagoon was dangerous in parts, there was always a possibility of accidents occurring. It was suggested that some temporary pro-, tectidn bo erected when the men finished their work each day. The Mayor said that moat of the rail? had since been replaced. As regards the installation of lights, this matter would be dealt with by the Lighting Committee. Mr Fraser said that it was impossible at the present valuation to install more than two extra lights. He had intimated to the league that the council would agree to set aside a certain sum as remuneration for a ranger. Mr Moller said that the council would be moving in the right direction by appointing a ranger, and he suggested that Mr H. M'Sloy be appointed ranger, and that the question of installing extra lights be referred to the Lighting Committee. It was decided that Mr M'Sloy be appointed ranger for the St. Leonards and Sawyer’s Bay wards, and that the extra lighting request bo referred to the Lighting Committee. CORRESPONDENCE. .
Mp F. J. Williams, civil engineer, forwarded a cheque for £7 17s 6d as the Dunedin City Council’s proportionate cost of the Dunedin-Port Chalmers road traffic talJf gg a _ Received.The Town Clerk of Dunedin advised that the licensing of heavy traffic motors was now receiving attention.—Received. Mr A. D. Asher wrote asking the council to consider again his request for a light to be installed at the corner of Burke’s road and George street.—Referred to Lighting Committee. Mr H. L. Tapley,- M.P., wrote stating, that he would lie pleased to represent the council on the deputation to the Govern-; ment which was being arranged bv theShannon Borough Council with a view t® obtaining assistance from the Mam Highways Board for" boroughs with a popular, tion of 6000 and uuder for work done _ by the board within the borough.—Received. ~ REPORTS. The Works Committee recommended that the crossings at the Post Office and; Grant street be repaired as soon as con-, vonient; also, that the pot-holes on the Main road be attended to.—The report was approved. The Finance Committee reported that, the receipts during the past month amounted to £59 IPs 6di and the credit, balance to £207 9s lOd. Accounts amount ing to £l6B Is 7d had been passed for payment. It had been decided that the, rates be the sairfe as last year, with the. exception of the hospital rate, over which the council exercised no control. This rate had been increased by Id in the £.—The report was approved. The Borough Inspector reported that thesurfacemen had been engaged in cleaning out water channels and water tables. A , water channel had been repaired. Tbem were a number of pot-holes in the mam road, and the road at Sawder’s Bay on the hill, and at the brick kiln was in a. very bad state. —The report was adopted. ,
