LADIES GOLF.
FINAL OF OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. MRS M’CARTHY DEFEATS MRS COOK. The large number of spectator which followed Uie final game of the Otago ladies’ open championship on the Baimacowan links yesterday afternoon neio treated t 0 a line exhibition of golf. Tho links were in good condition and the weather, though dull, was the best day of tho tournament. . The standard of play by tho winner, Mrs M’Carthy. of Otago, was exceptionally good, and it would have been difficult for any woman player in New Zealand to have beaten her on the day. Mrs M Carthy got out of difficulties very cleverly on two occasions when a win for her opponent seemed to be certain. At Camel s Back she made a great recovery the bunker, and won this hole by sinking her mashio approach for a 4. Again nt Manuka she was in trouble with a short dnvo which finished on tho side of the ditch. She halved this hole in bogey 5, with a good iron (fourth) on to tho green, and a 20ft putt. This year’s runner-up played her usual steady gamo f with only one bad hole. Tho winner outdrove her opponent at every hole. Mrs Cook, won tho toss and sent a straight ball away from the first tee. Mrs McCarthy had the longer shot, her ball finishing further up the hill. After second woods had been played Mrs Cook was further away from the green Mrs Al’Carthy was just a shade too strong with her mashio approach, whereas Mrs Cook’s shot fell short of tho pin by 6yds. Both missed their putt, and tho hole was halved in five. Two good drives were sent up tho hill to the second green. Mrs Cook duffeii jicr second shot, but recovered well. Mrs M’Carthy was just short of the green with her brassie, and her post was past the pin. Mrs Cook was on the green in 4, but nearer the pin. Mrs M’Carthy missed her putt for a 4. Mrs Cook’s putt stood on the lip of tho hole and was an unplayable stymie, the hole resulting in a half in 6. The third hole sow two fair drives, followed by two medium niashics. Mrs Cook’s approach pult was short, but she was able to get a 4 by a long pult, and the hole was halved. At Wilson's, Mrs Cook was short of the green with her tee shot, but approached well. Mrs M‘Carthy was to the right of the .green with her first, but very short with her approach, and she missed her putt. Mrs Cook, however, missed a chance of a win, her pult just missing tho cup—another halved hole in 4. Mrs M’Carthy hit the longer ball from the tec going to Terrace, but the lie for the second shot was bad, necessitating an iron, Mrs Cook was out in the centre with her first, but did not, get hold of her second properly. Mrs M’Carthy played a beautiful brassie for her next and finished on the green. Mrs Cook was short with her third, and placed her approach just short of tho pin. Mrs MT’arlhv holed a 20ft putt for a four (one under Iwgoy), and was one up. Tho Ridge was played well by Mrs Cook. She was 10 yards' behind her opponent’s drive, and, taking n mashio, was on the green nicely some few yards short of the pin. Mrs M’Carthy’s mashic fell short of the green and was on the sloped bank leading to tho green. Her approach was not up, and Mrs Cook, by laying her approach putt dead and holing out in four, made the game all square. The next hole was a sensational one. Mrs Cook was on tho brow with her drive, but Mrs M’Carthy pushed her tee shot out and finished in the bunker. She got out well with her niblick. , Mrs Cook was just short of the green with a good brassic. Mrs M‘Carthy was short with her third, and the hole looked like a win for Mrs Cook. Airs M’Carthy took a mashio and played a beautiful approach. The ball hit the pin, and she holed out. Mrs Cook had two strokes for a half, but was short with her third, and just missed her putt. Mrs M’Carthy 1 up. At Monastery Mrs M‘Carthy was well down the fairway after two good woods had been plavod. Airs Cook half-topped her drive and was over tho brow of tho hill with her second. Her third was slightly hooked and finished short of the bunker. Airs M’Carthy was on in three, and down in live, for another win.—Mrs M’Garthy 2 up. At Glen, both drives were good. Mrs Cook was short of the green with her second, and played her third indifferently, leaving herself a long putt. Mrs M’Carthy was past the pin with her second and dead for her third. Airs Cook missed her putt, the hole going to Mrs M’Cnrthy in four, making her 3 up at the turn. Airs M’Carthy went out in 41. At The Mount Mrs M’Carthy wag short of the green with her tec shot, her opponent finishing in the first bunker. Airs Cook played a good shot out on to the green. Mrs M’Cnrthy’s approach was perfect and lay alongside the hole which she won in three to four.—Mrs M’Cnrthy 4 up. The game seemed to be almost decided at this stage, but with dogged play Mrs Cook set to work to reduce the load. At Tipperary both had good firsts. Mrs Cook took a brassic, but came on to the ball too quickly to finish down the centre of tho fairway. Mrs M’Cnrthy took hc r iron for her second, but did not got as far as her opponent. She was teed up and took her wood this time, but pushed down into tho rough by the hawthorn hedge. Mrs Cook played an iron for safety to the brow of the hill overlooking the green, and was on in four. In playing out from tho Ice of tnc hedgo Mrs Al’Carlhv finished behind, the men s tec and picked 'up without penalty. Her mashio approach was short, however, and Mrs Cook reduced her score to 3 down with a bognv 6. At the dog-leg hole (Al Glaslinn’s) Airs M’Carthy had the hotter ot Urn tee shots, Alia Cook taking her wood and Airs Al’Caitliv her iron. Airs Cook finished slightly short of the top bl > nl ior. hcr opponent being on tho green about 2Utt short of the pin. Airs Cooks third oier the bunker was short, and by holing out in 4 Mrs M’Carthy was again 4 up. file thirteenth saw Mrs M‘Carthy drive a very -liort ball to the ditch, and Mrs Cool: iiit her best drive of the round, reaching tho top of the hill. Mrs McCarthy got out of trouble with a good shot, and was just short of her opponents second, with a good brasaie third. Tho dub, which Mrs At’Carlhy plays very well—her iron—placed her on the green but a long way from the pin. Airs Cook was on in 3 and out m b. Airs M’Carlhv sank a beautiful long putt and halved in 5. At Roy’s the tee shots were both good. Airs M‘Carthy was too strong, and Mrs Cook was short of the pm by 10ft with their mashio approach shots. M rs M’Carthy loft, herself a fnirV, long puff, which she missed, tho hole going to Airs Cook in 4.-Mrs Al’Carthy 3. up and 4 to plnv. Mrs Cook played Spion Kop with a Hi tic had luck after sending away n good drive. She half-topped her second wood from a bad be. The. ball finished m another bad Ho, from which she had some difficulty in getting out and to short of (he brow of the hill. Mrs Al’Carthy was on tho green in 3 and down in 5. to win the match by 4. up and 3. Mr Sleigh performed tho duties of umpire.
