Training operations were not of a busy nature at Forbury Park yesterday afternoon, but most of the horses present wore allotted useful tasks.
Nelson. M’Elwyn was jogged without hobblea. He looks fit and well for his xaoea at the meeting. Malice was sent along over a mile and five furlongs, and paced at a steady clip throughout the journey. Mate o’ Mine was given easy work without the straps, and the son of Four Chimes looks very well at present. Chimer had Needles as a companion in a solid trial, but the former paced the better of the two, and easily outclassed his mate at the business end. The recent rams have not seriously affected the Forbury Park track, and, it the weather is at all favourable in the meantime, there should be good going for the opening of the meeting on Thursday next. At the conclusion of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held on May 21, will be the only light harness fixture on the calendar as far as this end of the world is concerned.
Reports from Sydney state that the stable connections gathered a big win over Doji Moon’s success in the Doncaster Handicap. The rider was laid £ISOO to nothing, apart from his riding fees. The well-known Melbourne owner, Mr Sol Green, recently disposed of the goodlooking Coogee Bay because the Cooltrim horse did not quite come up to his requirements. Mr Green is convinced that Coogee Bay and his Martian gelding, Mara (from Bronze), for which he paid 20COgns, were soured by the use on them of the whip when they were young. He has therefore determined that in future jockeys shall not be to carry a whip when riding his juveniles. In doing this (says an, exchange) Mr Green has followed the practice which is officially required'in India, where, during the last year or two a regulation has been in force prohibiting the whip in two-year-old races. A prominent owner in Christchurch recently complained in a letter to the press about fast work being timed at Addington. What takes place on a public track should be public property, and in any case the practice is a recognised one in connection with the older branch of the •port, Pedro Pronto and Peter M’Kinney failed to find buyers when recently offered at auction. ' Rich Prize has been purchased by a patron of A. E. Wormald’s stable, and may be tried over hurdles. Some of the critics are expressing the opinion that Commendation was more than a shade lucky to beat Rapine in fho Awapuni Gold Cup. * A brother to Eaton Bolls was sold for COgns.at the Sydney bloodstock sales. , There was a lot of talk about the running at Timaru, but some of the horses least talked about wore those that really should have attracted official notice. Both Booster and Set' Sail showed a marked difference in form at Timaru from that they displayed a few clays previously at Riccarton amongst much better company. Set Sail was credited with running a good seven furlongs at Washdyke after the first day's racing at Timaru, and also with sprinting three furlong# well on the morning of the second day. The rumours of the gallops no doubt helped to make her favourite for the Autumn Handicap, but she ran on the outside of the field all the way and never emerged from the ruck. If good fields can supply good racing there should be some excellent sport at Forbury Park on Thursday next. There is a possibility that the Ashburton County Raping Club will abandon its winter meeting. The present intention is . to invite nominations, and if they are not considered satisfactory the meeting will lapse. .. , . When some business affairs which he has in hand are completed A. Pringle intends resuming occupation of his old stables at Ashburton. An excellent acceptance was secured for tholTince of Wales Handicap, which will fofPi "he star attraction at Forbury Park on Thursday. The missing are few, and consist of Taurekarcka, Escapade, Ivohara, and Logan Lou, and of the quartet named the last-named dropped out through meeting with an accident. The Petereta gelding Arctotis is said to have cost his present owner 600 guineas. Mr John Donald purchased throe marcs at the Sydney sales to strengthen his list of matrons at the Westmcre Stud. • At the Sydney sales Mr G. E. Robertson. who is handling the bloodstock side of Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. s business, amongst other .lines, purchased three yearlings for Mr E. E. Jolly, of Adelaide, and • they have been brought over to Wellington to join J. Lowes stable, where Mr Jolly has also two rising two-year-olds. T Mr A. Chisholm, of Invercargill, purchased the imported horse Woodend, by Lemberg from Queenlet. by Berrill, at the Svdney bloodstock sales. During the Sydney bloodstock sales some 30 vearlings were purchased for New Zealand, and the majority of them will be offered for sale at the Wellington winter meeting by Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. , , , ~ Mr A. H. Fisher has purchased the Solferino mare Coch-y-Bondhn, and secured a nomination to Tractor. Coch-y-Bondhu is closely related to Charloville. the dam of Windbag, and at some time or other she should bo bird to a horse of the Dark Konald —Hampton line, and so breed something on the same lines as Magpie. There seems to be a diversity ot opinion in Christchurch ns to what is likely to happen in connection with the two principal events booked to take place at I’orImry Park this week. Oneen’s General, Ilyias, Jock’s Pal, Hoon Hay, and Author Jinks are bracketed with Mnearandn. Fi^ht Ever, Jollv Chimes. Shine Soon and Event. Apparently there is some doubt as to a favourite, but Fight Ever will probably occupy that position in connection with the Prince of Wales Handicap. . It is understood that Tractors list is full for next season. . , During the Timaru meeting the Judicial Committee rightly deemed it its duty to inflict punishment on a rider who. to put it as mildly as possible, accepted defeat too soon. An inquiry was also held into . Ark Royal’s running, and, although the nature of the .explanation was not officially supplied, it appeared as if a very acceptable one could have been made. lue investigations could have Viocn carried much further, as some questionable riding on the first day, and again on the second, seemed apparently to have escaped the attention of the stipendiary steward. What creates common talk in tlw saddling paddock should certainly not escape the vigilance of an export racing official.
