GREEN ISLAND BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —Now that the excitement of the elections is over again, may I, as a rateCayor, suggest a few ways in which our oiough fathers may find scope for their activities? Good work has been done in rho borough during tho past two years, and I hope the council will continue on the same linos. Nothing shoddy will do; wo want a good, sound, permanent job. and all sensible ratepayers will back the council up in this. There is some talk of a drainage scheme for Green Island. I hope the council will inquire into this. An inquiry commits us to nothing, and there is no reason in refusing to face a thing because there are difficulties in tho way. If other bodies are interested, get them together and have a conference on tho subject. On tho subject of loans, 1 think it would bo progressive policy to have a long-dated loan, so that we could push ahead with permanent works which would add to. the amenities of the borough, and I believe if a loan proposal were put before the ratepayers to -morrow they would sanction it, on condition that the “Shylock’’ that stands ready to grab 5 per cent, of it could bo overcome. Another thing I should like to see pushed on is the beautifying of our waste placehv planting trees, etc. Now that our railway station staffs have shown tho way. it is “up to’’ the council to carry on the good work, and I think that in the present chairman of the Reserves Committee wo have a man eminently qualified to do so. I hope the council will also set the ball rolling as to the feasibility of having tho old Cavcrsham tunnel widened and made •nto a Great South road. This would make a magnificent highwav. and its accmpHshment would he a red-letter day in the history of Otago. let “Advance Crcen Island’’ he the motto of the council. There is no advance ".iihout security, but if municipal affairs are set. on a rock progress is certain. —I am, etc.. Ratepayer **•—— Majr 2.
