In connection with the announcement fhnt. the Jockey Club has decided to hold an inquiry into the means by which betting may beat be made to contribute to the maintenance of horse breeding and racing, it may be stated that only last month Mr Churchill intimated to a deputation of racehorse owners that if at any time the totalisator were legalised end became an important feature in rac-' ing those interested in breeding bloodstock horses could then claim a share in whatever was left over after the Government had taken its due. It has been known for some years that the pillars of the turf have been anxious to divert some of the profits of betting, ■which have hitherto gone exclusively to ” the bookmakers, into channels that would do more good to horse breeding.
