It is officially stated that Admiral Sir Charles Madden will succeed Earl Beatty as First Sea Lord on }uly 30.—Argus and Sydney Sun Cable. NEW SCHOOL OF THOUGHT. POLICY CHANGES FORESHADOWED ' LONDON, April 30. (Received May 1, at 5.5 p.m.) The Daily News expresses the opinion that Sir Charles Madden’s appointment foreshadows changes in the naval policy. Sir Charles Madden and Lord Beatty represent different ideas of naval 'development. Possibly it is a result of tbo ampler account of the Battle of Jutland, which hitherto in naval opinion has been partisan to the Beatty school.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
Admiral Sir diaries Madden was Fourth Sea Lord of the Admiralty from 1910-11; Rear Admiral in the Home Fleet from 1911-12; Rear Admiral commanding 1 Third and Second Cruiser Squadrons in the Home Fleet from 191214. He was appointed a vice-admiral in 1916, and an admiral-of-the-fleet in 1924. He served in the Battle of Jutland.
