EPIDEMIC OF BURGLARIES.

OUTBREAK AT CHRISTCHURCH. BOLD THEFT FROM SHOP. (Special to Daily Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 3a Within recent days there have been several thefts from seaside homes at New Brighton, and indications are not lacking that the borough and the neighbouring district have been subject to an. epidemic of petty thieving; but the daring character of a theft last evening from a shop at the corner of Pago’s road and Breeze's road raises it above the petty standard.

Mrs J. M. Thompstone, a widow, who conducts a general store, was engaged in a living room at the rear of the premises, but easily within hearing of anyone in the shop. Apparently she was watched from an empty section next door, and between 8.45 and 9.15 p.m, someone went quietly into the shop and behind the counter. The till, which contained about £2, a gold band ring, and papers, was removed from under the counter, and matches, cigarettes, and chocolates were stolen. The total value would be £4. Luckily Mrs Thompstone had paid the tradesmen during the day. This morning the til] was found on the section, the papers being scattered about on the wet ground. Chocolates and matches were found further along the street. Sis weeks ago the same shop was visited by someone who stole a large box of chocolates and other sweets.
