DIOCESE OF MELANESIA.
BISHOP STEWARD RESIGNS. ILL-HEALTH THE REASON. (Special to Timm.) AUCKLAND, April 30. Bishop Steward, of Melanesia, has forwarded his resignation to the Primate of New Zealand, Archbishop Avcrill. Illhealth is said to bo the reason for the bishop’s decision. Bishop Steward was appointed to the bishopric of Melanesia in 1919. He has not enjoyed the best of health since.
The bishop is a son of the late Rev. O. E. Steward, vicar of New Shorcham, Sussex. He was educated at Radley College and Magdalen College (Oxford), where he took his M.A. degree, and at Ely Theological College. Bishop Steward’s first missionary experience was gained at Guadaloanor between 1902 and 190 G. He was in Florida for live years, and was subsequently appointed priest in charge at Maravovo Theological College. He has resided since his election to the Bench of Bishops at Sioto, in the British Solomons. Melanesia is part of the ecclesiastical province of New Zealand. The election of a new bishop is in the band of the New Zealand bishops.
