Mirella was bowled along at a steady jace over a couple of circuits and paced soundly all tho way. Some Wilkes (harness) and Mountain Chimes (saddle) were sent away at the mile post, the former losing two or three lengths through tangling. He made a quick recovery, however, and was on terms with Mountain Chimes at the entrance to the straight for the first time. They raced like this until the commencement of the back stretch when Some W ilkes mixed again, but only slightly, and ho was up w i l h his companion in the next few strides. He remained with Mountain Chiracs to the bottom of the straight, but once in hn p for home he moved up and held his companion- at a head’s difference, finally winning comfortably, after not being fully extended, by half a length. _ Brampton, the two-year-old half brother by Lord Quex to Killashandra, has been sold by Mr T. H. Lowry to a patron ot J. Buchanan’s EUerslie stable. . , The pacing gelding Dillon Gold has left A. Hendrickson’s stable (says tho Christchurch Press), and is now under tho care of R. Townley, at Winchester. J. Deyell is keeping Nelson Ata in steady work, but it is doubtful whether the naifbrother to Proud Ata will be seen at his best for several weeks. R. Henry, who is well-known in trotting circles in New Zealand, is now trying his fortune in Tasmania with Royal Clive and Dixie John. . . , . Wenlo disappointed his trainer by his showing at Ashburton (says tho Lyttelton Times), and until he becomes better at the barrier he will probably bo raced in saddle events. ... R. Pollock has Harry Audubon in excellent fettle (says tho Christchurch Press), and is likely to' assist at Forbury Park with tho Great Audubon gelding. In the recent Doncaster Handicap contest at Randwick, the ox-New Zealander, Fool’s Paradise, ran badly over the initial stages of the mile, but subsequently finished up well in fifth place. During the first two days of the yearling ■ales in Sydney, New South Wales buyers spent 48,800 guineas and those from Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, West 'Australia, and New Zealand between them 50,755 guineas. The local people thus held their own very well. . The two-year-old Vestas, in W. J. 1. Tomklnson’a stable, is a regular attendant at Addington .(says tho Christchurch .Press), and is receiving a special preparation for the Ashburton Turf Club’s New Zealand Sapling Stakes in June. *, . ■ The Lyttelton Times states tnat the Southland-bred Homer is doinor plenty of •olid useful at Addington. Homer put up a good race in her last effort and seems to be regaining confidence. She is a useful mare, who should win a two-milo It appears that the sale Cimabue fell through owing to the," fact that the speedy youngster struck himself during tho Auckland Racing Club’s meeting, and was unable to pass a veterinary examination on behalf of Mr T. A. Duncan, of Wanganui. Lord Astor must be imr.essed by French stallions. This year he sent the 1925 Oaks winner, Saucy Sue, to Teddy; Gay Bird, third in last year’s Oaks, to Ksar; Wraf, to Massine, winner of the 1924 Ascot Gold Cup; and Mias Cavendish to Bruleur. Though Windbcg has proved himself one of tho greatest racehorses in Australia of recent years, it is - thought that his owner, Mr R. Miller, will not bo able to get the full value from him as a sire in Australia. Breeders prefer English-bred horses, and ft is possible that a market mav be found for Windbag in AmericaFrom Paris there is word that, photographers are now barred ’ at Auteiul, Frances principal jumping course. Tho stewards of Societe des Steeples took this step owing to recent accidents, and proceedings in the courts with reference to an accident to a horse and one to a spcc- • It is probable (says the Christchurch Press) that Tarleton will be tried over hurdles after he has fulfilled his Amberley engagements. Tarleton is a type likely to make a very useful hurdler. He is by Nassau, many of whose stock have shown, distinct ability in hurdles and cross-country events. The square trotter, Nellie Hugo, who was solidly supported and failed badly at the Invercargill Trotting Club’s recent meeting, was produced again at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s fixture. She raced badly in the event selected for her, and it looks as. if the big filly has trained off in the meantime. Te Kara went off the scene after contesting the Auckland Cup on Boxing Day. The prospects of the General Latour— March gelding again racing are not altogether hopeless. His name figures among the entrants for the Flying Handicap on the second day of the Waikato meeting. It was on this course that To Kara gained a surprise sprint victory on one occasion when the late A. J. M'Flynn rode him. The Southland bred pacer Will Soon, by Brent Locanda —Play Soon, who is owned by a patron of M. B. Edwards’s Yaldhurst stable, is at present in slings. It appears that the three-year-old, who first saw the flight of day at the stud qf Messrs Stevenson and M’Math, was kicked by another horse recently and had a bone in his shoulder broken. He was a very promising hoppled performer (says the Southland Times), and it is stated that the chances of his making a good recovery are anything but bright. Races are sometimes lost through jockeys waiting for a run on the rails and failing to grasp the opportunity quickly enough when the opening occurs. But that cannot be said of 31. M'Cartcn. When there is an opening available he invariably makes the most of it. On several occasions lie has proved his ability in this respect, says the Sydney Sun, and the opening day at Randwick was no exception. Of course, life was riding the goods in Royal Feast and Limerick, but in each instance it was noticeable that he came through on the inside at the top of the straight. The Great Autumn Handicap winner '(Piuthair) has contested 31 races up to date (says an exchange). Her record reading 11 firsts, one second, two thirds, and 17 times unplaced. She has won stakes to the value of £4700. The All Black mare (Blacakacla) was a lucky purchase to Mr R. A. MTxenzic. In successive seasons she throw three foals, who subsequently won fame under tho respective names of Clandliy, Clarinda. and Piuthair, who between them have won prize money to the amount of £9410. The yearling gelding bought by F. D. Jones at the Sydney Easter sales is by Shillinglce, an imported horse, by Llanbibby, son of Wildflowor (half-brother to Birkenhead), from William's Pride, by William the Third. The youngster's dam (Hoopoe) is a New Zealand-bred mare by Achilles, from Bulbul, by Sir Lancelot from Oricntale. whose sister Aida, was the dam of Impulse (New Zealand Cup), and Vhlan (Auckland Cup), while Dauntless and Daunt are two other good wimicis of tho family.
At a meeting which was held by the Melbourne Breeders, Owners, and Trainers' Association on April 12, many trainers and cross-country riders spoke against the stopping of stceplecliasing during the summer by the Victorian Amateur Turf Club. Most of the speakers were of the opinion that steeplcchasing in the summer was no more dangerous than in the winter ns long as the tracks were well watered. Koine suggestions for the alteration of steeplechase fences were brought forward, but it was decided that no alterations should be made except in the ease of the log fence on the bill at Caulfield. The meeting then passed a resolution Hint the V.AT.C. be approached and asked to reconsider its decision to abolish summer steeplcchasing at Caulfield. It was also agreed that a movement should be commenced to obtain
payment for schooling horses over hurdles and fences. It is likely that a meeting of jockeys •will be held to formulate a system of payments for schooling, which will be submitted to the V.R.C. committee.
A section of the Sydney press was inclined to become hysterical regarding police protection of Limerick, Royal Feast, and other class horses at Randwick. The chief racecourse detective of the A,J.C. took it upon himself to arrange police supervision, for one or two suspiciouslooking individuals had been seen hanging about the. stables. In all, it was a case of ‘•prevention is better than cure. At Riccarton one morning last week King Abbey and Radiac set out to jump the three steeplechase fences in the straight. Radiac, after jumping two m good style, ran oS at the second of the double. King Abbey gave an excellent display. Jovial and Oriflamb shaped well in a school over the hurdles. Bonatic went once round the schooling hurdles and gave a good exhibition of jumping. CJiarlatan jumped a couple of fences in his usual finished style. He is coming on well in his preparation for winter steeplechase engagements. ... In an interesting letter received by a Christchurch friend from the Melbourne owner, Mr Ben Chaffcy, mention was made of the serious illness of bis trainer, M'Calman, which resulted in Mr Chaffey’s whole stable full of horses (12 in number) which all looked like being fair in the autumn, simply “going to the pack.” Five two-year-olds trained off, and nothing could be done with Manfred without M'Calman, and it was principally on that account that the horse was retired to the stud at Richmond Park, in South Australia, whore Whittier and St. Anton arc now standing. Mr Chaffey states that geographically the horse will not get as many opportunities as in New South Wales, but the owner does not want any outside mares for him. Manfred was considered the fastest horse in the world, continues the writer, and the best English and Australian judges admit it. After his stop at Caulfield with R. Lewis/and M'Calman took sick, he was galloped one morning at Flemington, 40ft out, heavily shod, four big boots, and with nine stone up, and rah nine furlongs in Imin 52Jaeo easing up. Manfred’s trouble was not obstinacy; there was some process of dilation in the heart on a racecourse that seemed to stop the natural flow of blood to the brain, and the horse probably did not know what he was doing. Mr Chaffey considers he would make a great sire, and is one of the quietest, most docile animals one has ever had anything to do with, either in the stabe or on the track.

Tho Waikato Racing Club’s meeting was opened to-day in fine weather. The going was in good order, but a bit soft along tho back.
There was very little separating. Lady Spalpeen, Archibald, and Gold Hep in the betting on tho Frankton Hurdle Handicap, which was contested by a field of 15. Lady Arch was tho early pacemaker, running out of the straight from Wiltshire, Scot Free, West Abbey, Slump, Archibald, and Lady Spalpeen, and was first into the straight, where she was followed at intervals by Te Tahi, Slump, Kamehameha, West Abbey, and Lady Arch. Nothing had a chance with Lady Spalpeen in tho run home, and she won comfortably by four lengths. Slump showed improved form to got second place, three lengths in front of To Tahi, next to finish being Wiltshire, Kamohamcha, Wedding March. Lady Arch, and Gold Rep. Thirty saddled up for the Trial Handicap, and Catapult was sept out a warm favourite, with Whaka King also 'yell supported. A firm start saw Lucy Glitters jump out smartly, being by Atapai, Master Mind, Te Waka, Annagour, Catapult, and Micrometer. Crossing the top Master Mind moved up and was first to turn for home, being followed by Lucy Glitters, Storm Fiend, To Waka, Atapai,' Whaka King, and Catapult. Once straightened up, tho favourite closed on the leaders and got up to win by half a length from Royal DouHon, who finished too strong for Master Mind and Atapai, both of whom were right up. Then came T%> Waka, Whaka King. Catclaw, Day Rose, and Rod Comet. Captain Cobhani was bracketed with the winner and Micrometer with tho second horse. Nine started in the Juvenile Handicap, Rpeechloss being better supported than Standfast, with High Tide also heavily backed. At the start Adoree swung round and lost her rider, and Merry Dance stood on the mark. Speechless was first away from Standfast, Whakarite, and High Tide, but after going a couple of furlongs Carlaria went to the front and showed the way into the straight from Whakarite, Standfast, Speechless, and Aurioulus, and High Tide. In the run home Speechless came with a well-judged run end won by three-quarters of a length from Carlaris, with Standfast half a length awav third, Whakarite was fourth, and High tide and Auriculas next. Quincoma and True Blood . were withdrawn from the Storey Memorial Cup, the Pegaway and the Hipo-Mint Leaf bracket disputing favouritism. The start "-as a perfect one. Day Guard led out of tho straight, being followed by. Master Doon, Hipo, Mosaic, Ballachulish, Barometer, and Pogawav, the last pair being Lord Star and Mint Leaf. Running rmst tho six furlongs Day Guard still held conimand, being pursued by Mosaic, Master Doon, Hipo, Barometer, Ballachulish, Muscari, Pegaway, Queen Arch, Miss Vera and Lord Star. 'The leader was still there at the homo turn, and right on his heels wore Master Doon, Hipo, Mosaic, Lord Star, and Queen Arch. A furlong from tho judge Master Doon was in front, but then Transformer came nlon" with an irresistible run and beat him "by half a length. Mosaic was only a neck away third, next to finish being Queen Arch, Mint Leaf, Gold Jacket, Hipo, Day Guard, and Barometer. ()„ 21 starters in tho Borcseourt Hack Handicap £l9 separated Tinokoa, FcsW Lento, and Paddon on the totahsator, and thoro was a good drop to Bright Dawn. Rabepoto was first to become conspicuous, being followed by Winsomo Boy, Abbey Day Adjustor, Constellation, and Bright Dawn. A little further on Adjuster had a slight lead, and crossing the top Bright Dawn took charge, mid ho led into tho straight from Ramblin Kid, Winsome Bov King Arch. Cantab, and Rahepoto At the furlong post Bright Dawn retained tho advantage, but then Paddon put in his claim and outclassed tho field, scoring easily by four lengths from Bright Dawn. A big outsider in Ramblin’ Kid ro > neck away third, and next to cross the lino were War Officer. Abbey Day. Constellation, Rahepoto, Thurnrosac. Wmsomci Boy, and Cantab. Tinokoa and Miss Coinct fell, their jockeys being slightly " I p,cau' Cavalier was favourite in a sixnorso race for tho Linloy Steeplechase, and Kendal was the only other backed, iho contest was a three-horse affair. Beau Cavalier. Kawa, and Pendcnnis being in the van for tho first round, after which Kawa dropped out of the runnnmg. Iho favourite had a slight advantage at the laH fence and won by a length and a-half from Pendcnnis. Ilazolburn was 20 lengths away, and Kendal (who lost several lengths at tho star) was fourth. The President’s Handicap drew 18 runners, Kingfield being a better favourite than Nancv Lee, Oration, and Delightincut. Oration began very quick y. but when thev settled down Kingfield had charge from Nancy Lee I-lying Juliet, Royal Blood, Ned Kelly, Dan Quin, Arch Opal, and York Abbey. As they commenced to swing into tho home stretch Flying Juliet had half a length advantage over Kingfield and King Lu. with Nancy Lee Ned Kelly, Dan Quin, and Royal '■■food following. Once straightened up, the favourite quickly collared R lying Juliet, and went on to win by a length from Flying Juliet, with Nancy Lee half a length further off. Archeno was fourth and Dolightmont, King Lu, Dan Quin, York Abbey, and Arch Opal wore next. In the concluding event Hyde Park was solidly supported. King Smock, and Bright Knight being evenly backed Iho favourite began best, and piloted the noirl along the back and into the straight, where Bright Right, Athenry. Rarangi. Prince Abbev, Quincoma, and V enday wore close tin tho last pair being King Smock and Peter Maxwell. The favourite was first beaten, and a furlong off the post Bright Knight looked a certain winner, when King Smock came along and overhauled Bright Knight to win by a head. Qumcoma was a moderate third and Passionate fourth.

SOUTH CANTERBURY RACES. SECOND DAY’S EVENTS. BALDOWA WINS AUTUMN HANDICAP. (From Cue Special Repobteb.) TIMARU, April 30. , The South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting was concluded in fine weather, though tlj® atmosphere carried a wintry tingo. A fairly large attendance participated in the excellent sport provided by the second card of the programme. Tho club was decidedly unlucky, as there is no doubt the very bad weather on tho first day proved a serious drawback to what would otherwise have proved a successful meeting. The track provided excellent going, and some very interesting racing took place during, the afternoon. Too much nso was made with Dubious in tho hurcllo race, as ho was taken up lo the leaders a milo from home, and this no doubt ac cenfuatod his big burden and left him without a finishing run. Goldtown ran a good race, and should soon win over hurdles. Tho bulk of tho betting on. Iho April Stakes was centered on Card Trick aucl Money Peer, but towards the close of business support camo for Ark Royal and Court Jester. Card Trick and Court Jester loft tho others far behind over the first threo furlongs, and were still well clear at tho distance, where Card Trick commenced to tiro and left Court Jester in charge. Princess Mafalda and Money Poor wore dosing on the leader when Ark Royal flashed up on tho outside and secured the verdict by a head from Court Jester, whose rider apparently thought he had the race won. and ceased riding a couplo of strides from the poet. Princess Mafalda finished close up with Card Trick, and Money Peer next. Ark. Royal appeared to come with a very brilliant run, but the hot pace set in the early stages no doubt caused the leaders to stop and make them came back to their pursuers. Ark Royal appeared to be hopelessly out of it at the home turn, but, os in all bis races, ho stayed on well and this brought him what was, nevertheless, a win not devoid of hick, because if Court Jester had been ■ 'dden right out he would have won. After tho race the Judicial Committee held an inqnirv into Ark Royal’s running on the first day, and accepted tho explanation given by the trainer and rider. The nature of tho explanation was not supplied. On (he first day Ark Roval drew tho outside number of a big field, and as ho is a slow beginner had a double handicap against him. On the second day ho drew No. 3 and no doubt was favoured by the extra distance. He, neverthlcss, had to cover a lot of ground on tho outside in the run home, and only arrived on tho scene in tho last 50 yards in a by no means fast race — 1.15 1-5, ns compared with tiio following ono run in 1.13 2-5. Court Jester is a fine cut of a well-grown two-year-old by Comedy King, and looks sure to win races. Rob was a strong paddock tip for tho Pareora Handicap, and ho won, but. only by a narrow margin from the consistent Receipt. Sorotina was running on at the finish, and Volant, who is not quite ready again, ran a very fair race. Set Sail, was made favourite for the Autumn Handicap, but after beginning well she gradually dropped back and never emerged from the ruck during tho race. Booster showed u marked contrast on his first day s fenn and made the pace all the way• Ho looked to be a winner until Baldowa shot through on tho rails 100 yards from home end won galloping away at. the finish. Bilbo was well up at the distance, but faded out. Mountain Lion was the first horse beaten and fell back after being ono of tho leaders to the home turn. Baldowa was probably benefited by his race on the first day, when he covered a lot of ground on tho outside of the field. Ho pulled up thoroughly sound and should win again during the balance of tho season. Poho finished very gamely in the, Tomuka Hack, but was lucky to beat Moratorium, who lost a lot of ground in the early part of tho race and then came with a great run in tho straight to get second. Spodo was unlucky, ns she got a bad passage all the way, and never soemod able to procure an opening from a pocket in which sho ran nearly -ill the way. Lucy Locket shaped a lot better than on the first day. Gay Sonnet wont down so sore in her preliminary it at her poor display in tho race created no surprise. Tho broken-winded Royal Praetor again showed brilliancy, but stopped badly over tho final furlong. King Abbey made the early running in the Wai-iti Steeplechase, but fell back and gave way to Blue Hall who led over tho final circuit ana won from ’Frisco Mail. Adjutor made a bad jump Boven furlongs from home, ai.d Muzzlo fell early in the race. During tho day £13.845 went through tho totalisalor, compared with £15,159 on tho corresponding day last year, making £23,011 for the meeting, as against £30,172 registered at th© meeting hold last season.
