SATURDAY’S MATCHES. DIVISION I. Northern -.- • 3 Technical College .. v. 0 H.S. Old Boys 2 Y.M.C.A 1 Maori Hill .. 3 Mornington .. 0 Southern .. .. 3 Seacliff .. >• 3 The following table gives the positions of teams in Division 1: —

NORTHERN v. TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

Upwards of 200 spectators witnessed the game at Culling Park between Northern and Technical. Some good play was shown, but on the whole neither side excelled in combination play, and the result Went in favour of the more experienced Northern team by three goals to nil.

Northern kicked off, and Secular sent M'Tavish away. The latter, going through the defence, failed to get past Holden, who saved well. A couple of sorties by Technical were repulsed by Coates and Cherry, and M'Lean and M'Cormack, working together, took play to Technical territory, -where a shot from the lino by M'Lean was saved by Holden. Witchal was prominent foV Technical, the forward movement ending in M'Quarrie punching the ball clear, A further attack by Morrow and Middlemas saw the latter’s centre missed by the inside men. Northern were making little headway against the defence of the Technical backs, and Coates was forced to kick over to avert an attack by the opposing vanguard. A poor clearance by M'Donald, Technical’s right back, gave Munsie 'possesion, and his centre into goal was partially cleared by Holden, allowing M’Cormack neatly to hook the ball through. Northern 1, Technical nil. Technical continued to hold the upper hand, but poor placing and wild kicking spoilt their chances, and M'Quarrie and Coates cleared the attacks. Northern returned play, and a fine centre to goal by M’Dowcll was mulled by Holden and M'Cormack tapped the ball into th» net. Tho referee ruled him offside, and the goal was disallowed. Hector was playing solidly at right half for Technical, and, along with Morrow, sent his forwards away on the right, M'Quarrie having difficulty in clearing the resultant shot. Play moved up and down. Munsie drove hard oh one occasion, but Morrow blocked the shot, oad a Technical rush brought M'Quarrie out of goal to save. Play was quiet, neither side showing to advantage. A good clearance by Cherry allowed M'Tavish and M'Cormack away, but Morrow again frustrated the attack. Towards the end of the spell Northern were having the best of the plav. Secular, with a good control of the play, kept his forwards well supplied with the ball. Holden missed a cross to goal, but retrieved himself later by saving a close shot from M'Cormack. A free-kick to Technical brought relief, and M'Quarrie was called upon to clear, and further nice play by Hector and Witchall saw the latter’s header into goal tipped over the bar by M'Quarrie, Half-time was called without further change in the score. Resuming in the second half, Northern showed better play, and a good run by M'Dowall on the right, who crossed to M’Lcan, ended in the latter’s shot striking the upright. The defence cleared the danger, and determined attacks by Technical, following good play by Hector and Batchelor on the right, wore unavailing against tho Black and Whites’ defence, which also disposed of a couple of crosses from Middloniass, At tho other end, Holden cleared a shot from Munsie by throwing himself at tho ball and beating M'Tavish, who had come up smartly. Midfield play followed, and the forwards on either side passing without direction allowed the bocks to hold the play. Cherry headed over a shot, and the corner-kick was hotly contested, but Technical were too slow in their shooting. A series or attacks followed from the Black and Whites, Holden clearing a shot by M'Dowall, and, M'Hugh placing the ball in front of goal, Holden again saved brilliantly by diving for tho ball. A pass by M'Cormack was taken up by M'Lean, who placed high into goal, whore Holden was charged, and, missing tho ball, it found tho net. A doubtful goal which gave Northern a lead of two goals. _ Shortly after the restart M'Lean got in front of goal with only Holden to beat, but shot into the goalie’s hands. Northern continued to have the better of the play, which was without interest, little combination being in evidence. Technical s defence was hard pressed, and the few attempts of their forwards to break through wore cut short by Secular, Coates, and Cherry, who wore very sure. Munsie took the ball through and passed into goal. Holden, failing to hold the ball, M'Tavish touch it into the net. Northern 5, Technical nil Hector and Batchelor werd prominent in & final effort for Technical. and from a nice cross by the former, Witchall, with a neat header, just failed to net. Time was called shortly after, and the game, controlled by Mr Sudden, ended: Northern Technical NiL MAORI HILL v. MORNINGTON. Tho match between Maori Hill and Mornington. played on Prospect Park, attracted a few spectators. Balk won the toss, and M'Gregor started the attack, but Hill soon took a hand, and Proctor, Hill’s centre, brought Harborae, Mornington’s custodian, to his knees with a fast one. Even play followed till Balk broke away on the wing,' but Braithwaite relieved with a strong kick. Hill still kept up the pressure, but Braithwaite was sound. Mornington set up an attack, but nothing eventuated, the forwards being very slow. Hill returned to the attack, and Balk sent across a fine ball, which Proctor headed into Harborne’s arras. Morris missed a good chance from a cross by Balk. Mornington, who were playing with 10 men until Liddle came on as a back, commenced an offensive, but good work by Johnstone, Hill’s right back, saved the situation several times. Shots by Balk and Carso followed without succesj. Vnew, Mornlngton’s wing, broke away and looked dangerous until Johnstone relieved with a strong kick. L. Johnston started Mornington’s forwards going, but the shooting was very weak. Lowden failed to take a good chance from L. Johnston Hill forced the first corner, but Braithwaite cleared strongly, and Proctor missed by inches with a header. Halttime was called, neither side having scored. From the kick-off Hill rushbd play to Mornington’s goal, and Proctor drew the defence and gave to Carse, who made no mistake, Maori Hill 1, Mornington nil. Mornington attacked from the kick-ott, but Calligan was safe. Agncw broke away for Mornington, but his centre went astrav. Uninteresting play followed, during which Hill had slightly the better of the exchanges. Mornington eventually forced the play to the Hill mid, and Callaghan made a good save. The play became very indifferent at this stage, both teams seeming to tire. At length Dickison broke awav on the Hill wing and sent across for Carso to score his second goal. Maori Hill 2, Mornington ml. irom the kick-off Hill pressed again, and Proctor gave Carse another chance, which the player accepted, bringing the total to three, and thus scoring the hat trick. Shortly after time was called, and a very poor game, controlled by Sir Budge, ended. Maori Hill 3 goals. Mornington Ail.

Southern having had the best of the spell, which was marked by an unwonted lack of combination amongst the home team. , On resuming Seacliff at once infused greater life into their play, and but for the lack of combination already noted- should certainly have been in a winning position. Poor shooting was also conspicuous, but the bringing of Cooper up to bis usual position of centre-half added strength to the attack. The visitors’ back division, however, showed sound defence, Graham, in goal, repeatedly saving in fine style. At length a free kick by Rogers wont to Wright, who netted quickly.
