GROSS INDECENCY.
CHRISTCHURCH GIRLS ACCOSTED MYSTERIOUS BIOYOLK RIDER,. {Special to Daily Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 29. Instances have been occurring where girls have been accosted on suburban streets at night by a man and grossly insulted. The circumstances in each case appear much the same, and it seems apparent that the offender is the same individual. He rides a bicycle so that he is able to get away quickly, and, curiously enough, ho usually accosts girls who are in pairs. A typical case which occurred this week illustrates his methods. Two young women turned from Webb street, and entered Papanui road, walking towards Bealey avenue. At the corner a man rode slowly past them, and made some remarks. As he did so they, of course, took no notice. Further down the road he dismounted, and ho called out again. It was then noticed that his attire comprised an overcoat, socks, and boots. The approach of a motor car caused him to decamp hurriedly. Two nurses were th© subject of attention recently in much the same way, and were reduced to a condition of hysteria. When the man firet made the remarks they noticed that he worp a pyjama suit. He rode ahead, and they lost sight of him. Later the crash of a bicycle drew their attention. It was the man again, and he had discarded his pyjama suit. A number of cases of such character have been reported to the police. Girls have also been accosted and insulted on the Cashmere Hills by a cyclist, both at night and in the day time, but in these cases there does not appear to be the element of gross indecency as in the other instances’mentioned.
