SCOTLAND INVADED.
IMMIGRATION VERSUS EMIGRATION. The problem of alien immigration into Scotland was never more acute than it is at the present moment, and the worst aspect of the situation is this, that while the immigration of aliens goes on apace the emigration of native-born Scots goes on unheeded (writes a serious-minded correspondent to the Weekly Scotsman). If we look up the census figures for 1921 we find that there were then 415,000 persons resident in Scotland that were born north of the realm. Of this number we find that almost half (189,385) were born in England. The figures stagger us; we can hardly realise that such a state of matters exists; and when we stop to consider that the above figures do not include those born in Scotland of. English parents the question becomes more vexed. If the Scots people were brought to realise that probably something like aquarter of a million English people are resident in Scotland, I question if they would *‘ca’ sac cannie.” We deplore the Anglicisation of our people ami our institutions in general, and lament the departure of the best of our sous and daughters to foreign lands, there to seek the living denied them at home; but how seldom do we pause to seek a solution of the dire situation in Scotland? We have Gaelic societies, Scottish societies. Burns clubs, vernacular circles, and what not. all with the avowed or ideal object of combating the advance of Angbcisation, or the preservation of our beautiful Gaelic tongue, or the Braid Scots; but do they, any more than the average Scot, realise the danger of haying so large and influential an English element in our midst? The result of this English immigration is obvious to any thinking person—it means the ultimate elimination of the remaning traits or characteristics of our Scots nationality. And, apart from this highly sentimental re:-rson, there is the injustice of a forced Scots emigration to make room for the Saxon in our midst.
