VAWARD WINS BIG RACE. STEEPLECHASE TO VICE GRAND (From Our Special Reporter.) INVERCARGILL, April'7. Bad weathe seriously marred the pleasure of participating in the concluding day of the Southland Racing Club’s meeting. Heavy rain set in overnight, and the morning broke dull and threatening, the concluding part of the card being got off in heavy rain. In fact, when the mile saddle trot was being run it was almost impossible to distinguish the horses in the heavy fall of rain. The track became heavy, but, despite the antagonistic weather, there was a fairly good attendance for an off day. .. . King Balboa went out favourite for the Myross Handicap, but had no chance with Ijady Tractor, who showed considerable improvement on her first days form, and won comfortably. Frivol failed to stay bevond six furlongs, and lakaka, staying on well, suffered defeat by only a narrow margin for third place- , Mirella started favourite for the New River Trot, but settled her chance by refusing to begin, and Deset Star worried Nelson M’Elwyn out of the big money in a good finish. , , . Mime was elected favourite for the President’s Handicap, but when bowling in the lead he collapsed at the home turn, and Overhaul ran :n a length in front ot Receipt, whilst Rob, whom many thought would not act in the going, drew “up and finished third. Receipt ran a good, race, 'as she was one of the last to .get going, and with a better jump-out must have "vice Grand had too much pace for the opposition in the Invercargill Steeples and after Ranui and Night Raid fell at the sod wall nothing proved capable of getting near him. . Rapier started a pronounced fancj tor the Awarua Handicap, but, after setting a solid pace with Set Sail in the early stages, was under punishment over two furlongs from home. Vaward ran to the front over three furlongs from home, and, kept busy, won well from Bilbo and a well-spread field. Some interference took place during the race, but after an inquiry was held sufficient evidence could not be found to settle the trouble on anyb°wingatui made a pne-horse race of the Bluff Handicap, as she V OD '' a fr„ver the finish after running to the front o\er three furlongs from home. # u 1 Boy Blue struggled home in the Dash Trot which was run in a downpour.
