Ministerial. The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates (the Prime Minister), who had associated with him the Hon. K. S. Williams, Minister oi Public Works, received a number of public and private deputations at the Grand Hotel yesterday morning. In the afternoon Mr Williams paid a visit to the Taieri, to inspect the embankment which is being constructed at the Taieri River. The Ministers, accompanied by their wives, will return north this morning, spend tomorrow in Christchurch, and sail for Wellington in the evening.^ The Hon R. A. Wright (Minister ot Education) and Mrs Wright, with Mr W. I. Deavoll (private secretary), will leave this morning for Invercargill to visit educational mstitutions there and in tho country districts. Mr Wright expects to return to Dunedin on Friday. Mr W. D. Hunt left Dunedin yesterday morning for Wellington. Mr Keith Napier, brother of Superintendent A. G. Napier, is visiting Dunedin. Mr W. R. Hayward was a passenger for the north by the express yesterday morning en route to Wellington. Mr H T. Smith was a passenger by yesterday’s north express en route to V\ ellington. Major P. H. Bell was a passenger by yesterday’s express for the north. Mr F. Johnson, of the Department of Industries and Commerce, left Dunedin yesterday morning for Wellington. It was reported at a late hour last night (says a Masterton Press Association telegram) that the condition of the Hon. D. 11. Guthrie, M.L.C., is very critical. A motion of condolence with the Mayor in regard to the recent death of his mothei, Mrs D. Anderson, was carried by the Port Chalmers Council last night. The Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes has consented to his nomination for the vacancy in the University Council caused by the assumption of Dr Macmillan Brown of the post of '’hancellor (reports our special correspondent in Christchurch). The nomination is made by the Canterbury College graduates. Messrs C. Russell Smith, H. Wilson, W. Thomson, and G. Ritchie, directors of Messrs Charles Begg and Company, accompanied by Mr T. Ritchie (general manager) , left Dunedin yesterday morning tor Christchurch and Wellington. At a meeting of the Southland Rugby Union last night Mr J. Richardson, the well-known All Black forward, was (an Invercargill Press Association telegram reports) appointed secretary. This means that Mr Richardson’s playing days are ended. It will be remembered that he captained the .All Blacks in the three international matches during the _ 1924 team’s famous tour of Great Britain. Mr J. J. Marlow will be a candidate for a seat on flip Council at the municipal elections in April. Mr Marlow, who was previously a member of the council, was also Mayor of St. Kilda for a term, a member of the old South Dunedin Counoil, and member of the Drainage Board for 16 years.
