ST. KILDA COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council was held last night, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr R. W. Hall), and Crs Edgar, Roy, Teller, Fleming, Long worth, Beattie, and M'Ourdy. A letter was received from Mr W. MacKenzie, tramways manager, stating in reply to a communication from the borough that tho motormcn were periodically warned to use every precaution at the Grey street crossing. If, however, specific instances of lack of caution by motormcn were reported to tfco tramways department it would be more satisfactory. Ho noted that tho hedge at this point had now been cut. back, and this, in his opinion, should make tho crossing quite safe for vehicular t radio.—The letter was received. Tho Mayor said that the council had a credit balance of £2574 to meet tho payments to the City Council for the electric lighting of the borough, as against £IB7B for the corresponding period last year. The Finance Committee recommended that a further payment should bo made to the City Council, leaving only one year’s instalment to bo paid. The interest on the remaining instalment would bo only £35 7s 2d, and the saving in interest would represent a considerable sum.—Hie recommendation was approved. A letter was received from the Minister of Finance (tho Hon. W. D. Stewart) stating that the board set up under the Local Government Loa%’ Act would commence its work on April 1, and conveying certain information regarding the working of the Act.—The letter was received. TTie Finance Committee reported that tho district fund account was in credit £3925.
