BREACH OF PROBATION.
MAGISTRATE'S STRONG COMMENT. (Special to Dai ? Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 22. “It is my invariable rule to send a mar to gaol for not complying with the terms of his probation unless there arc exceptional circumstances,” said Mr E. i Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, when agreeing to a week’s remand in the case of a middle-aged man named John Jeffrey, who pleaded to this charge. Senior Sergeant Roach said the accused had been admitted to probation at Auckland for ‘2 months on a charge of theft. He had reported to the probation officer here only once. The Magistrate said that probation was a matter which should be very strictly complied with. The onus was on the individual and the only remedy was gaol. Accused was remanded for a week, and on his own application bail was allowed, self in £IOO, and one surety of £IOO.
