NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. FOUR RECORDS BROKEN. iPeb United Pbess Association.) AUCKLAND, January 2.2. The New Zealand swimming championships wore opened at the tepid baths this afternoon. The principal race was the ICO Yards Ladies’ Championship of Now Zealand, which was won by Miss Ena Stockley for the third year in succession, in the fast time of 67 3-ssec. A Dominion record was established in the 75 Yards Intermediate Girls’ Breast-stroke Championship, which was won by Miss M. Rydon, Auckland, and formerly of Hawke's Bay, in 65 2-ssbc, clipping a second off the previous record held by Miss D. Broward, of Christchurch. Miss Sybil Brown, of Auckland, equalled Miss L. Coults’s record of 32 2-ssec in the 50 Yards Junior Girls’ Championship. The heats of the National ICO Yards Championship were swum. Results:— 100 YARDS LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP First Heat.—M. Jepson (Otago) 1, M Farquhnr (Auckland) 2, P. Page (Auckland) 3. Time, 2sec. Second Heat.—J. Bell (Auckland), 1. K. Miller Otago) 2, E. Stockley (Auckland) 3. Time, 71 3-ssoc. ■Final. E. Stockley 1 J. Bell 2 M. Jepson - 3 Time, 67 3-ssec. The six competitors got away to a perfect start and covered the first lap almost in a straight line. The first turn saw the swimmers still together, with the exception of Miss Page, who was some feet away. Miss Farqunar went slightly ahead over the second lap, but was beaten to the turn in 66 2-3 sec by Miss Stockley who was closely followed by Miss Jepson. Miss Stockley made a bad turn, but made up the leeway over the final lap, and won by a good yard. Miss Bell swam strongly to second place, with Miss Jepson a touch away. Miss Farquhar was fourth, Miss Miller fifth, and Miss Page last. 100 YARDS NATIONAL CHAMPION SHIP. First Heat.—A. A. Adamson (Auckland) 1, N. S. Batchelor (Wellington) 2, L. Fairgray (Auckland) 3. The only starters. Won by two feet, a yard between second and third. Time, 62 3-sscc. Second Heat.—Lindsay (Canterbury) 1. J. Rix Trott (Wellington) 2, N, Dowsett (Waganui) 3. Also competed: J. Enwright (Auckland). The last-named was responsible for two false starts. A hard race saw a great finish—a touch each way. Time, 60sec. The final will he swum to-night. 75 YARDS INTERMEDIATE GIRLS’ BREA ST-STROKE CHAMPIONSHIP. Misses M. Rydon (Auckland) 1, D. Breward (Christchurch) 2, E. Anderson (Wanganui) 3. The four starters went down the first lap in close company, Miss Rydon leading from Miss Breward. The leaders turned together at 66 2-3 yards, and Miss Rydon drew out. to win by a touch. Miss Breward was one yard ahead of Miss Anderson, who beat Miss Broadhead by a foot. The time, 65 2-ssec, was one second faster than the New Zealand record, held by Miss Breward. 50 YARDS JUNIOR. GIRLS’ CHAMPIONSHIP. First Heat.—Sybil Brown (Auckland) 1, L. Howarth (Wanganui) 2, M. Rodgers (South Canterbury) 3. Won by a touch. The time, 32 2-srcc, equalling Miss L. Coutts’s New Zealand record. Second Heat.—N. Courts (Auckland) 1, V. Berry (Canterbury) 2, J. Breer (South Canterbury) 3. Won by a touch. Time, 33see. ■ Miss Brown always had a slight advantage, and won by a foot, five yards separating the second and two third girls. EVENING SESSION. LINDSAY'S GREAT EFFORT. (Peb United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 23. Four New Zealand records were broken and one was equalled at the first session of the swimming championships at the tepid baths on Saturday afternoon, and in the evening the one mile record was lowered by 62 1-5 see to 23min 36 4-ssec by the Canterbury champion, I). P. Lindsay, who also passed the 880 yards’ mark in the record-breaking time of llmin 40sec. Recently he lowered the 880 yards record io llmin 54 3-ssoc. Gordon Bridson won the intermediate boys’ 220 yards championship in 2min 35sec, and broke Cunnold’s record by three seconds, while Leslie Olds (Otago), aged 12, reduced the 100 yards junior boys’ record by 1 l-ssec to 66 3-ssec. Swimming in the 75 yards intermediate girls’ breaststroke championship Miss M. Rydon (Auckland) lowered the record by Isec to 65 2-ssec, and in the heat of the 60 yards junior girls’ championship Sybil Brown equalled Miss L; Coutts’s record of 32 2-ssec. The results of the evening races are: 100 YARDS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. Final. A. D. Adamson (Auckland) 1 N. Dowsett (Wanganui) 2 L. Fairgray (Auckland) 3 A thrilling finish saw Dowsett and Adamson hurl themselves to the end of the baths together. Adamson won by a touch. Time, 59 3-ssec, which was surprisingly slow in the circumstances. ONE MILE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. D. P. Lindsay (Canterbury) 1 E. V. Cunnold (Auckland) 2 A. Stokes (Canterbury) 3 Also competed: A. E. Baird (Auckland), J. Enwright (Auckland), W. Ryland (Wanganui). Varying his pace, Lindsay covered the half-mile in llmin 40sec, a record for the distance. Great applause greeted his wonderful sprint over the last lap. The time was 23min 36 4-ssec, which was Imm 2 l-sseo better than the previous record. 220 YARDS INTERMEDIATE BOYS. G. The Amateur Swimming Union of Australia lias decided to accept an invitation to send a team of five swimmers to tour Japan in August next. It was also decided to allow the invitation of the New Zealand Swimming Association to Misses Couldwell and Robertson to tour Now Zealand to lapse, owing to the inability of Mbs Couldwell to make the trip this year. (Received Jan 23, at 5.5 p.m.) Swimming in the 440 yards championship of Victoria, Takaishi (Japan) won, with Wilson second and Walter (Victoria) third. The Japanese won with the greatest case in smin 55sec. The 440 yards breaststroke championship resulted as follows:—Steadman (Victoria) I. Hopkins (Victoria) 2, Stevens (Western Australia) 3.
