GOVERNMENT NOMINEES. ANNOUNCEMENT BY MINISTER. (Specie to Daily Times.) WELLINGTON, January 21. The appointment of the four Government nominees on the Council of the University of New Zealand, now in process of reconstitution in .the terms of last season’s amendnig Act, was announced by the Minister of Education (the Hon. R. A. Wright) to-day. Those appointed will hold office for a term of three years. They are:— Mr Thomas Reid Fleming, M.A., LL.B. The Hon. Josiah Alfred Hanan, M.L.C. Mr Thomas Hugh Macky. Mr William Barr Montgomery.

“With the exception of Mr Hanan,” said Mr Wright, “all the representatives are new men as far as the University is concerned. It will be found, however, that they are exceedingly capable, and should, I believe, do excellent work in the council.

“Mr Fleming has been closely identified with education in New Zealand for a great number of years. He not only understands the academic side, but he also has the business knowledge which will prove of great assistance to the council. The Hen. Mr Hanan has been on the University Senate for a number of years, and has done excellent work in the past, and can be relied upon also to do excellent work in the future. He has the knowledge, and is generally well equipped for the position. “Mr Macky, one of the principals ot the firm of Messrs Macky, Logan, Caldwell (Ltd.), is well known in Auckland, and, indeed, throughout New_ Zealand. He is a young man full of vitality and energy, and is one of the leading business men in the dominion. His advice, particularly upon the business side of the university work, will prove invaluable. “Mr Montgomery, formerly Collector of Customs, proved himself one of the most valuable civil servants in the employ of the Government. Although new to the work, he is such a painstaking and industrious man that he will soon get a grip of the university work* and carry out his duties with credit to himself and to the country. “I think that the Government nominees,” added Mr Wright, “will prove their worth in a very little time, and be of very great assistance to the council when it is fully constituted.”
