LABOUR IN AUSTRALIA
MR CHARLTON OUT OF FAVOUR. MR THEODORE TO CONTEST SEAT. (press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright.) Mr W. G. Mahoney, a Labour member of the House of Representatives, has resigned owing to ill-health. Mr E. G. Theodore, ex-Premier oi Queensland, has been selected by the Australian Labour Party to contest the byelection. It is anticipated that Mr Theodore will eventually replace Mr M. Charlton as Labour leader. Great dissatisfaction was created by Mr Charlton's attitude on the referendum proposals, which resulted in the loss of much prestige as a leader, and it is generally thought that the majority of the party is only awaiting an opportunity to depose him from the leadership. ENGINEERS THREATEN FORCE. SYDNEY, January 15. The Amalgamated Union of Engineers is taking a ballot of its members to deside whether it should empower the district committee to force the metal trades employers to grant them full wages for a forty-four-hour week. This decision is in direct conflict with the intentions oi the Australasian Society of Engineers, which decided against a strike.
