THE SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL.
TO THE EDITOR. SiE,—l quite agree with much that your correspondent ’’Resident says in to-day s Daily Times about the surroundings of the memorial For his information I may -tate that early last winter, at a com mittee meeting, I drew attention to the need of improving appearances and also to the desirability of replacing some, if not all, of the non-flowenng deciduous trees with selected specimens of lany beautiful New Zealand flowering trees, several examples being named. My reason for so doing was the fact that many visitors to the town asked me why wc ('row European trees there In preference to New Zealand trees. - The spot is seen bv almost every visitor to town, and now that tho memorial is standing in it, will be visited by most strangers, so that appearances will count for much. Then, too. native trees can bo had that flower from early spring to late autumn, so that for six seven months at least some tree or trees would be in flower. The chairman of the Reserves Committee is '< member (he committee to which I refer, but as he was absent from the meeting, I wrote to him, informing him of the proposal, T also wrote lo tho Curator of tho Gardens giving him my ideas. Nothing has been done, and at a subsequent meeting drew the ntten tion of the chairman of th Reserves Com mittee to the matter He scoffed at the idea, and said visitors might an to the Botanic Gardens and see a’l they wanted there. So ended P matter.—l ■"n, etc., Gordon "xald
