ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
FOUND SHOT. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, December 20. An inquest into the death of Charles Robert Hewett, aged 63, of Cambridge, whose body was found in an old gnrr.field beyond Milford on December 2, was concluded before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., coroner. Constable Wood said he found the body with a shotgun beneath it near some scrub. Death had occurred quite two months previously. The body was fullv clothed, including a raincoat. One barrel of the gun had been fired, and the other was loaded and at full-cock. In spite of long inquiries no trace of deceased s movements after October 1 had been discovered. Deceased had £230 in bank notes, and a portmanteau with him when he left home, but neither could bo found. The coroner found that deceased committed suicide by shooting on or about October 2. KNOCKED DOWN BY BUS. (Special to Daily Ttmes.) AUCKLAND. December 20. Gertrude Scully, aged 10, who resides with her parents at Dcvonport, was knocked down by a motor bus in Albert road, and received a fracture of the skull. She was admitted to the Auckland Hospital, and. her condition is still reported as serious. ■ WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, December 20. Injuries to the head were received by Mrs H. Colwill. of Rcmuera, through a fall from a horse and a kick on the leto temple at Piha, on the West Coast, yesterday afternoon. She was conveyed to a convalescent home at NThotupu and tne St. John Ambulance Brigade despatched an ambulance for Ninotupu. On the journey into town Mrs Colwill was attended by Dr Mark, of tho Auckland Hospital. Ihe ambulance had to stop on the road for the purposes of redressing. _On arrival in town Mrs Colwill was admitted to a private hospital in a serious condition. The ambulance had covered the journey of 35* miles in two hours. To-day Mrs Colwill s condi Hon was reported to be very much improved. •BOY’S SKULL FRACTURED. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, December 20. A seven-year-old boy named Harold Rainbow who resides at Avondale, received a fracture of the skull yesterday afternoon. Tho boy had gone to the stable to attend to a horse, and it apparently kicked him. He was at an early hour last evening admitted to tho Auckland Hospital in a serious condition. To-day the authorities reported that there had been no change in his condition. MARRIED WOMAN DROWNED. iPeb United eess Association., HAWERA, December 20. The body of Alice Steffert, married, aged 30, was found in the dam at Wharcroa yesterday afternoon. She had been missing since Saturday morning. CAR FALLS OVER BANK. iPe-. United Pbeb> association., LEVIN. December 20. A motor fatality occurred near Shannon on Saturday evening, when a man named R Bloomfield, believed to belong to Haweia, lost his life. Boonfield was given a Utt along the road by Joseph Patrick Lavin, of Wellington, who was proceeding south in his car. Going down a hill outside of Shannon the driver kept out to tho left, expecting to meet an up-coming car which he had observed previously. Going round tho corner the car went over the side, and fell 20ft. Lavin extricated himself, but Bloomfield’s skull was fractured. Inquiries made by the police at Hawera go to show, though there is no actual cer_ taintv that the man killed is Roy Victor Bloomfield, aged about 28. He had been ■ffonnimr with his uncle at Hawera, but left there on December 10 for bhannon in search of employment. DEATH FROM POISONING. (Peh United Pbess Association.) BLENHEIM, December 20. A woman named Hannah Dorothy Vercoe aged 26, who was admitted to Wairau Hospital nine days ago suffering from lysoi poisoning, died this morning. MARRIED WOMAN’S DEATH. (Special to Daily t imes.) CHRISTCHURCH, December 20. At tho inquest on May Yardley aged 45, married, who was found on Saturday lying dead in the kitchen of her home road with a tube in her mouth leading from a jas mg, evidence was given that deceased visited a friend and complained of domestic and financial worries. She had expressed a desire to commit her two young boys to a home . f, ho was very depressed and hinted at suicide. The inquest was adjourned till Wednesday. ASPHYXIA AND HEART failure. (Special to L aily Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, December 20 The inquest on Violet Evelyn Mitchell, aged 39, married, who collapsed and died suddenly at her home on Wednesday last, was concluded to-day. \Dr A. B. Pearson said that the post mortem examination indicated that death was due to asphyxia and heart failure, followed by hemorrhage on Hie brain. The case was an unusual one, as hemorrhage, except -in cases ot violence, generally occurred in the brain, but there were no signs of violence in this case. ■ The Coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence. REMARKABLE SHOOTING accident. (Peb United Pbess Association.) OAMARU, December 20. An extraordinary shooting accident occurred on K. D. Meyer’s farm at Nauru Hill to-day. Meyer, accompanied by David Pollock, aged 26, a mustarer, went into a paddock to destroy a cow with a Marlin rifle. Meyer fired and the bullet entered the animal’s forehead and emerged at the car. It ricochetted 20 yards and lodged in Pollock’s back near the spine. The doctors are unable to locate the bullet. The injured man is in hospital, and his condition is satisfactory. A BOY DROWNED. George Spence, aged 14, who lived with Mr Christie, an Allanton farmer, was found drowned in a lagoon near Allanton yesterday. He left home at 1.30 p.m. on Sunday to go fishing, and was later seen in a boat at 3.30. He failed to return home, and a search was made, his body being recovered at noon yesterday. An inquest will be held before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., at Allanton this evening. DEATH FOLLOWS FALL. A man named Alexander Maskill died in the Clyde Hospital on Sunday as a result of a fall from a horse 10 days ago. WOMAN FOUND DEAD. The police have been advised from Ophir that a married woman named Mary Bailey, 52 years of age, who was staying with her daughter at Armstrong’s farm, Poolbufn, was found dead in bed on Sunday morning. Deceased, who belonged to Bluff, had recently received medical attention for asthma. A FRACTURED LEG. John Souness, a married man, 51 years of age, who is employed by the New Zealand railways as a labourer, was taken to the Hospital at 3.10 yesterday afternoon suffering from a compound fracture of the left leg. A fall of earth at Burke’s caused the injury. A WOMAN INJURED. Mrs William Wilson, aged 73 years, residing in Clyde terrace, Kaitgngata, slipped and fell on the concrete steps at her back door on Sunday morning about 8 o’clock. Dr J. Spencer Dowell was called in, and found two fractures of the hip bone. Mrs Wilson was taken by ambulance van to Balclutha Hospital,
