OBITUARY.

MR ADAM HENDERSON. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, December 13. At the age of 95 years one of the pioneer shipbuilders of the Waitemata, Mr Adam Henderson, died at his home in Victoria road. Devonport. Mr Henderson was born ip England, and served a long apprenticeship in a dockyard before joining a vessel as carpenter when 20 years old. He was one of the crew of the Phoenix which was carrying stores for the troops during the war in the Crimea. His ship wae at Constantinople when peace was declared. On November 5. 1858, Mr Hendorsori arrived in Auckland with his wife and child by the barque Harwood. For 17 years Mr Henderson lived in Auckland and then in 1875 went to reside at Devonport. During the Waikato war Mr Henderson was with the naval volunteers at the Miranda redoubt and also at Thames. After the war, with his late partner, Mr Spraggon, he established a shipyard at Smale’s Point where the old Auckland graving dock stood. The business soon won a leading position in Auckland. After Mr Spraggon’s death in 1898 Mr Henderson carried on the business but retired from active participation at the age of 75. leaving his son in control. A number of fine vessels have been turned out by the firm, notably the famous schooners Pacific, Sea Breeze, Ocean Jubilee and Hikurangi. Mrs Henderson predeceased her husband 15 years ago. MR THOMAS FAIRLEY. Mr Thomas Fairley, who died suddenly at his home at Mt. Albert. Auckland, on Sunday, was for many years a muchrespected resident of the Kaikorai Valley, Dunedin. He came to New Zealand in the ship Lady Egida in January, 1861, landing at Port Chalmers. He later carried on business as a butcher at Green Island and Kaikorai Valley. He took a keen interest in volunteering, and was a member of the W r akari Riflles. As a runner, he made his mark on the sports field in the early days, when meetings were held at Montccillo, North-East Valley, and other places. He was for about 50 years a member of Court Pride of Dunedin. A.O.F. The late Mr Fairley, who was in his 79th year, is survived by his wife and a family of four sons and five daughters.
