LEVEL CROSSING SMASH.

CAR CRASHES INTO TRAIN. OCCUPANTS’ FORTUNATE ESCAPE. (Fbom Ous Special Coebsshondent!) INVERCARGILL, December 12. A miraculous escape from serious injury was the experience of two young men on Saturday evening, when a twoseater motor car in which they were driving crashed into the 10 o’clock goods train at Clyde street crossing. It appears that the men were driving up Clyde street towards the town. On approaching the crossing they could clearly see the lights of the town ahead, and for this reason concluded there was no train in the immediate vicinity. The goods train was aetually on the crossing, however, and when the driver of the car noticed this it was too late to avert a collision. Fortunately for the occupants, they were thrown clear, and, beyond minor bruises and scratches, were uninjured. The car was badly smashed, and will be unfit for use again. A dog accompanying the men wasj less fortunate than its masters. The animal, which had been comfortably perched on the running board. of the car, was thrown under the train and killed instantly.
