LONDON’S TRAFFIC
GIANT BRIDGE PLANNED. NEW WONDER OF THE WORLD, (Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, December 9. (Received Dec. 10, at 5.5 p.m.) A giant bridge from Trafalgar Square across the Strand and the Thames to Waterloo station, which is likely to he a new wonder of the world, completely transforming London landmarks, and which is to be competed in seven years, is at present the subject of favourable comment by experts. It will bo a great double-decked overhead bridge, carrying an enormous volume of traffic. It will link up the south side of the Thames and Trafalgar square in two or three minutes. The Cross-River Traffic Commission’s report advocates an expenditure of £27,500,000 to construct five Thames bridges and to rebuild others. It also recommends the demolition of Charing Cross station, the construction of a road from Dartford to Purfleet, the erection of a bridge between Southwark street and Holborn viaduct, a double-decked bridge at Charing Cross, and a raised roadway across the Strand. The Evening News states that the commission reported in favour of two new high-level bridges at Charing Cross and Ludgate Circus, and others at Pimlico, Fulham, and Chiswick, and also a tunnel to the East End Docks. It is proposed to spread the work over 15 to 20 years. The report opposes the new St. Paul’s bridge and the demolition of Waterloo bridge.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
