THE GLORY OF WEMBLEY

TURNED TO COMMERCIAL USES. PROGRESS OF DEMOLITION. (Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, December 9. “Sic transit gloria.” Wembley in a year has sufficed to turn ornate pavilions into factories, laundries, and garages throughout the country. According to the demolition contractor (Mr A. J. Elvin) the concrete walls of the famous Palace of Beauty now form the foundation of one of the new arterial roads from London. The Ceylon Pavilion is a coachbuilding factory in London, the Nigeria Pavilion is a garage at Preston, the Palestine Pavilion is a laundry at Glasgow, and the others are being used abroad. Mr Elvin has now contracted to demolish the dominion pavilions, from which he expects to obtain 15,000 tons of steel. The Australian and Canadian Pavilions contain 2500 tons of timber apiece, and will provide material for several factories. Only the solid-built Palace of Engineering, the Civic Hall, the Conference Hall, the Theatre, and the Stadium are to be allowed to remain.— A. and N.Z. Cable.
