“ITS A SCANDAL.”
VALUATION OF PROPERTY. GOVERNMENT OFFICER CRITICISED. (Special to Daili Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, December 10. “It’s a scandal,” declared Mr White, counsel for an objector at the Assessment Court, this afternoon. “I say it is an emphatic scandal that an officer of the Valuation Department should come along here and say that he has valued the property without having inspected it. It’s no good for a valuer to visit a property, speak for a couple of minutes with the owner, ask him if here is a mortgage on the land, and then leave. That’s not enough. Yet that is what was been done. Why, there might be a swamp at the back of the house. I can bring evidence to show that one of the Government valuers offered to reduce the valuation on one property to the extent of £2O an acre. Why? Because he knew he had made a blunder. It’s a disgrace.”
