A SURGEON ABROAD.

AMERICAN HOSPITALS PRAISED. DR BARNETT’S IMPRESSIONS. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, December 7. Very keen admiration of American hospitals was expressed yesterday by Dr L E. Barnett, formerly professor ot surgery at the Medical School at the Otago University, on his return from an extended tour of the Continent, Great Britain and the United States. Dr Barnett, who was a passenger by the Niagara, was accompanied -by Mrs Barnett and their daughter. F He said that most of the great American hospitals had the support cfweaithv patrons, whose contributions enabled these institutions to bring their equipment up ro date, and keep abreast of the most modern practice. While in the United States Dr Barnett spent some time at the famous Mayo Clinio at Rochester. He mentioned that he had made three visits to the clinio within, the past few years, and noted that each time this wonderful institution had made considerable progress in tlie matter of research work. One feature that struck the visitor was the number of new Zealand graduates who were visiting tne clinic and getting first hand information about the research work being earned on there. On his recent visit he saw Dr MTndoe, a young New Zealand graduate of the Otago Medical School, who was on the junior staff of the clinic and doing very good work in the research branch. During his visit to Great Britain Dr Barnett also came across a number ot young New Zealand graduates who had gone home for post graduate study. He said he was extremely pleased to find Die high esteem in which these young men wire held, and this was shown by the appointments many of them had obtained. It was gratifying to find that the New Zealand graduates were so highly thought ° f ‘T certainly think we are proceeding on the right lines in New Zealand, added Dr Barnett. “There are ilo doubt a lot of things to be learned from the older countries, but I do not think our hospitals are behind those of towns of similar sue abroad. It has always seemed to me a very - wise thing for our young medical men to go abroad every few years, and thus keep New Zealand up-to-date. I hey have been doing that, and it is this fact that helps to explain why our hospitals are «o efficient.”.
