HEAVY RAINFALL. Heavy rain fell in the city and suburbs from an early hour yesterday morning until late in the . fte.nqon. The tali between daybreak and midday was exceptionally heavy, being continuous for at least seven hours. Low-lying lands were practically/flooded, and portions of the Oval and Carisbroolc carried large sheets of water. The fall was heaviest between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., and the water rushed in torrents down the street channels from the hill suburbs. The sky cleared about 6 p.m., and there was a fitful gleam of the sun’s rays. Last night the sky was again banked with heavy clouds. GALES IN CENTRAL OTAGO. FARM WORK AT A STANDSTILL. (From Oub Own Correspondent.) CROMWELL, December 7. During the week-end there were signs of more settled weather than has prevailed during the season, but these did not materialise. Heavy gales raged yesterday, and during the night and tins morning there has been a fairly copious rainfall. In consequence, shearing and haymaking have been held up. RAINS ON WEST COAST. A TRAIN HELD UP. (Special to Daily Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, December 7. Swollen by torrential rains on the West Coast and at Arthur’s Pass, the Waimakariri was reported to-day to be rising rapidly, and as the recent cold weather had given the hills a heavy coating of snow it was anticipated that there would be another heavy flood. However, the warm nor’-wester changed to a cool south-west wind early this afternoon, .and light rain fell this evening. The latest reports state that the danger of the river rising abnormally is past. More trouble is reported on the railway on the Otira side owing to the heavy rain. A mixed train is held up between Jacksons and Aickens, about five miles from Otira, owing to the river overflowing the line. FROM RAIN TO SUNSHINE. WELCOME CHANGE IN AUCKLAND. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, December 6. The warm sunshine to-day was a pleasing change from the wet and unsettled conditiona of the past few weeks. The weather during the latter half of November and for the first days of the present month was very unseasonable, wet and boistci’ous conditions prevailing. There was littio improvement during the week-end, but today, with a light wind from the south, the sun shone down from a clear sky. The baromtor is rising. APIA OBSERVATORY" RECORD. Mr A. Thomson, director of the Apia Observatory, sends the meteorological summary for the month of October, fiom which the following facts are extracted: Average atmospheric pressure, 29.86 in. Average maximum temperature 85.5dcg; the average minimum 72.5 deg; the approximate mean, ■ 79.26 deg; an average daily excess of .84deg as compared with the normal for October. The highest reading the shade was 88.0 deg on November 21 and the lowest 66.2 on November 10. The mean relative humidity was as follows: 7a.m., 75.6; 2 p.m., 68.5; 9 p.m., 75.5 per cent, of saturation. Total bright sunshine, 260.7 hours. Twenty-five days were dear, three were partly cloudy, and three cloudy The rainfall measured 6.87 m, which tell upon eight days, as follows: —Mb- U points; 6th, 2 points; 15th, 5 points; 23rd, 169 points: 24th, 141 points; 28th, 190 points; 29th, 11 points; 30th, 152 points. The heavy rains on October 23 and 24 may be considered to mark the beginning of the rainy season. The accumulated deficiency since January 1 was 16.78 in.
