BRUCE COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Bruce County Council was held yesterday, Chairman (Cr W. J. Sheat) presiding. There were also present Crs Jasper Clark, H. M. Driver, D. M’Gregor, D. Gardyno, Thos. Johnston, Jas. Lockhart, W. Bell, A. Renton. A. King, and V. Wilson. CORRESPONDENCE. Tho Secretary of tho South Otago Progress League wrote asking for the council’s support in the league s rccpiest to t)ie Main Highways Board that the road leading from the main traffic bridge at Balclutha to Kaitangata be declared a main highway.— Resolved that the clerk reply, advising that the council’s recommendation in this matter had already gonq forward to the Highways Board. Xhc Town Clerk, Balclutha, wrote advising that his council had agreed to pay a quarter of tho cost of main highway signposts in its district.—Received. A petition signed by six residents was received, requesting that the county metal and repair a portion of Shakespeare street, oft’ Burns street, Milton.—Resolved that the inspector be empowered to call _ for tenders to have the work proceeded With. A letter was received from Mr J. H. Duthio, pointing out that a water course near his property had become badly blocked, and that in flood time the water from it, was flowing on to and damaging the country road. The writer asked that the council exercise its powers and order the owner of a property through which the water course ran to clear it.—lt was decided that the chairman, and Crs King and Driver inspect the water course and report to tho next meeting. _ A communication was received from the Tokomairiro River Board notifying the council to clear the growth of young willows from several spots on the Tokomain’ro River.—lt was decided that the inspector bo instructed to attend to the matter. , . . Tho District Engineer wrote advising that the council’s application to the Main Highways Board for a straight-out grant of £SOO towards the maintenance of the road from Taieri Ferry to Clarendon had been refused. Further advice was received that the board had agreed to provide £ISOO for the maintenance of main highways within the county.—Both letters were received. GENERAL. The application of Mr J. Finnerty, Tawanui. to hire the council’s crushing plant at a rental of 25s per day was granted. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The inspector reported as follows on the work done in tho various ridings during the month: — Work throughout the county has been hold up owing to the wet weather. Balmoral No. 1 Hiding.—A start has been made to open up a now quarry on Mr Shepherd’s property at Puketi. Balmoral No. 2 Riding.—'lho metalling contract on Pillan’s road and the gravelling contract on Moore’s road are well in hand, and should be completed in a few days. Crichton Riding.—One overflow culvert of 13in pipes has been put in on the Lovell’s Flat-Kmtangata road near Currie’s Creek; also surface work done on tho Elliotvalc road. , Matau Riding.—Maintenance metal has been put down on the Benhar-Stirling road, and portion of the water-tables cleaned out. Inch Clutha Riding.—A protective fence has been erected at tho approach to tho Kaitangata bridge, and several deck planks renewed on the Stirling bridge. Kaitangata Riding.—A further movement has taken place at the slip on the Kai-taugata-Wangaloa road, and a deviation is required to make tho road on good ground above tho slip.—The tractor and small grader were sent to Doom be Hay to fill in ruts, but owing to the continued wet weather this work has been left in the meantime. ' Glenledi Riding.—The tractor and small grader are working on the Coast road, grading the loose metal from the watertables into the ruts. Waihola Riding.—Scrub has been cut back and ruts filled on the Waihola to Taieri Mouth road. A tank has been put in at tho spring on the Taieri Beach road to provide water for campers and picnic parlies. Clarendon Riding.—A team has been employed during the month at road_ repairs on tho boundary road above Berwick, and surface work has been done on various roads. Mount Stuart Riding.—Grading has been completed on Findlay’s and Alexander’s roads. Two culverts of 6in pipes have been put in on Canada Reef road. Toko Riding.—Grading has been done on Cannon’s. Newbiggipg’s, Stewart’s, Murray's, Healey’s, Hughes’s, and Cemetery roads. The Elliptvale road has been surfaced. General.—The small grader which has been in constant use for the past 15 years is getting beyond repair, and another light grader should be procured. ' Main Highways. —Very little work has been done on tho Dunodin-lnvercargill road during the month. The tractor and big grader are working on tho Clarksville to Alexandra main highway between Round Hill and Manuka Creek, taking off the high sides and cleaning out water-tables. This work is not intisfactory owing to the railway fence encroaching on tho roadway for over two miles. Nine men have been employed on main highways during the month of November and have worked a total of 65 days. Tho report was adopted. RANGER’S REPORT. The Ranger reported that 26 cattle and nine horses had been impounded during the month. FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £1239 8s 7d were passed for payment.
