SWAMP KAURI
COMPLAINT FROM AUSTRALIA. PRACTICALLY WORTHLESS. (Pveei Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, December 6. In a paper read before the Royal Society Mr M. B. Welch, B.Sc., pointed out that, owing to a shortage of New Zealand kauri, a considerable amount of timber was being milled from buried logs taken from swamps and shipped to Sydney. Although it appeared to be of excellent quality, on drying it warped badlv and ruptured across the gram. Tests had shown that it was only onethird as strong as sound kauri. This swamp kauri, the lecturer said, was in niost cases practically worthless, ana should be avoided.
