PORT CHALMERS COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council was held last night and was attended by Mr T. Anderson (Mayor), Crs Allan. Bell, Willmott, Campbell, Morgan, W. Love, A. Love, Smith, and Lunn. On the motion of the Mayor, votes of condolence were passed with tho relatives of tho late Messrs.,A. Farquharson and W. Stewart.' CORRESPONDENCE. The Secretary of the Port Chalmers School Committee wrote asking for tho use of the Town Hall for the annual breakup on December 16.’—The request was granted. Mr F. J. Williams, engineer of the West Harbour Borough Council, wrote forwarding paysheets showing wages paid for taking tally of traffic on the Dunodin-Port Chalmers road. The Port Chalmers Council s share was £7 7s 6d.—On the motion of Cr Willmott the letter was referred to the Finance Committee. Mr F. W. Penlington, chief postmaster at Dunedin, wrote regarding the council’s request for a light over the posting boxes and for extension of hours for the private box lobby. He expressed the view that 9 o’clock, as at present, should meet the requirements of Port Chalmers, and suggesting that the council cither install a higher powered lamp at the present lighting point, or erect an additional light.—The Mayor said this was a long-standing application, and they understood it had been practically granted. Ho did not think they should take this lying down. They should ask the postmaster to fulfil his promise. Cr W. Love said he thought they should not let the matter drop They had been promised the light, ‘and there was no doubt it was needed. He moved that the chief postmaster be asked to carry out his promise to have a light erected, as requested.—The motion was carried. REPORTS. The Works Committee reported that during the past fortnight the foreman and staff had been engaged chiefly on general maintenance work and cleaning out storm-water drains and water-tables about the borough. The following streets in Carey’s Bay bad had attention: Cemetery road, Wihnott’s road, Low' road, Slant street, Harbour terrace from Slant street to Wilmott’s road, and Coombo Hay terrace. The material taken from the latter streets had been carted to widen and strengthen the road in Harbour terrace in front of Mr Fletcher’s property. The water-tables at Flagstaff had been cleaned, also the lower end of Grey street. Scotia street is now having attention. The work at Carey’s Bay is now nearing completion, and a great improvement has been effected. Pot-holes arc now beginning to show up on Maeandrew road, and the committee recommend that in order to keep the good surface of this road that it be further treated with a coating of IMn metal and screenings. Twenty-two loads of good soil were carted from Mr Coleman’s property to the Recreation Ground. During the fortnight all mud tanks had been cleaned and channels swept.—Cr W. Love moved the adoption of the report, and it was carried. The Gas and Water Committee reported that everyone was working satisfactorily at the gasworks. During the past month five now gas services had been connected up, and a further application is being made for a service to supply a gas cooker. The committee recommended that a few repairs which required doing at the manager’s house, in the way of spouting, be authorised, also that 35 tons of coal be ordered, which will be sufficient to carry over the holidays. The foreman reported that the water service at the Sailors’ Rest had now been satisfactorily fixed up. Mr Timlin’s water service in Wickliffe terrace also had attention. The old sin water main at Prattley’s corner had been cut, and was now more convenient for the purposes of scouring.—On the motion of Cr Allan the report was adopted. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the past fortnight amounted to £795 in the general account and £59 17s in the gasworks account. The expenditure amounted tp £ll7 13s 2d (general) and £34 11s 4d (gasworks). Cr Campbell reported that- the Finance Committee had had no meeting, as he and other members of the committee had been away. He moved that the accounts stated be passed for payment, and this was agreed to.
