NAVY LEAGUE ESSAYS.

ANNUAL COMPETITION. PRIZE WINNERS IN OTAGO. In presenting his annual report on the essays submitted to him in connection ■with the Navy League's 1926 prize essay competition, the examiner (Mr John H. Stewart) states tha tthe number of High Schools, District High Schools, and Colleges whose pupils entered for the competition was 20, and the number of primary schools 110. The essays submitted were : —Junior, 852; senior, 138. The essays written were:—Junior, 5322, senior 571; total, 5893. Four district high schools did not forward senior essays. Three of these, however, had been recently established. The Balclutha High School had been added to the list of schools competing, and also the two junior high schools in Oamaru. As in previous years many of the essays, both senior and junior, were of great merit, but it seemed to Mr Stewart that on the whole the seniors had not done as well as they did last year. This year's subject was, be thought, more abstract, and required a wider acquaintance with political, industrial, and racial tendencies than that of last year. The lessons to be learned from Nelson's life were quite neglected by many. This accounted for lower marks in a few schools, but these faults were, quite over-balanced by the large number of essays which showed intelligent and appreciative reading and judgment reaching beyond the mere details of naval history. The names of essayists who made at least 80 per cent, of the possible number of marks are as follows: Otago Boys’ High School.—Senior: R. S. Birrell 82, R. F. D. Ritchie 80. Junior: C. M. Arthur 82, L. F. Moller 81, H. F. Gardiner 80, D. S. Nicholson 80, M. W. W. Johnson 80, G. E. Moloney 80. Otago Girls’ High School.—Senior: Elinor Harvey 81, Daphne H. Cowie 80. Junior: Marjorie F.
