GALA DAY AT WOODHAUGH.

TRIANGLE LAWN TENNIS CLUB’S FUNCTION. Favoured with splendid weather, the gala day promoted by- the_ Triangle Tennis Club attracted a very large number of | people to tho Woodihaugh Gardens on Saturday afternoon. Those beautiful | grounds were looking their best and pre- | sented quite a carnival appearance. The committee responsible for the project of raising £SOO to lay down four new tennis courts at Woodhaugh had apparently gone to work with a determination to carry out the scheme successfully. The members of the committee, which was headed by Mr J V. Hanna, had succeeded in enlisting the sympathy of a number of young ladies which appeared to be successful in getting the nimble sixpence from tho patrons of tho carnival. Shortly after 2 p.m., Mr J. G. Anderson addressed tho assemblage and said tho committee had set out to raise £SOO for the purpose of laying down four new courts and it was hopeful of doing so. It had made a start with an art gallery of Dunedin views past and present and had also had a street sale both of which had brought in a satisfactory sum of money. They were very pleased to have with them one of their club members. Miss Thelma M'Millan, who had undertaken to declare tho carnival open. He called for three cheers for Miss M’Millnn, and this was responded to with vigour. Miss M’Millan said it gave her groat pleasure to be present. She expressed satisfaction that the weather seemed to bo on its best behaviour, for the event and the bright sunshine was a happy augury. She then, amidst applause, declared tho carnival open. Mr Anderson said they also had with them Misa Isobol Wilton, from Wellington. Miss M’Millan’s maid of honour in tho recent beauty competition, and he asked those present to accord Miss Wilson three hearty cheers also. On this being responded to bliss M'Millan and Miss Wilson were each presented with a handsome fancy basket of sweets The following, were the principal stallholders:—Sweet stall, Miss A. Keast; icecream stall. Miss M. Powell; side-shows, including various games. Mr Sligo; mis ccllaneous poods and produce stall, Miss L Beadle and Mr A B. Backingsale; afternoon tea, Miss L. Thomas; art gallery Dunedin past and present. Miss Stocker.' Mr J. G. Macfarlane, as hon. secretary of the carnival, carried out his duties in a highly capable manner. Tho Green Island Municipal Band was in attendance : and, under Mr Deer, the conductor, played a number of selections- all of which was appreciated
