END OF THE MONOWAI.
NEARLY PRECIPITATED. PREMATURE SINKING AVERTED. (Per United Press Association.) GISBORNE. December 4, The hulk Monowai, which was being prepared for sinking ae a protective breakwater* was nearly prematurely sunk last evening. Just prior to knocking-off tune a plate dropped and broke the seacock. The vessel was then lying five miles from the port. Assistance was immediately sent, and a gang worked continuously until 4.30 this morning, many pumps being used- to keep the water down till repairs were effected. The vessel is now safe. Had she sunk, salvage would have been impossible, ae only the bare shell remains and it is loaded with stone. Exceptionally heavy seas are running in the harbour A launch which went out yesterday was unable to return til! .to-day, while other shipping is being interfered with. Forty * e .f of the retaining wall at the mouth of the river diversion was demolished, and otner minor damage is reported.
