A very substantial amount of work is now assured for Belfast after materials and fuel are again available. The Royal Mail Steam Packet Company and the xvolson Line are to have built by Messrs Harland and Wolff five fast passenger vessels for service between London and the Rivei Plate. The vessels will have large insulated space, and each will be of about 15,000 tons. With the nine motor vessels, each of from 7000 to 8000 tons, the rm is to construct for the King Line, of London, there will be at least 11 vessels to lay down iu Messrs Harland and Wolff’s yards. ■. * ITALIAN SHIPBUILDING. The driving power generated by that human dynamo Benito Mussolini, says an exchange, is propelling Italy fast on her forward course —especially in shipbuilding. Lloyd’s Register shows that at the end of June, 1926, Italy had increased her shipping bv 1,720,000 tons since 1914, standing third to the United States and Japan in respect of tonnage increase since that fateful year. The tonnage of the British Isles increased barely 2 per cent, on the tonnage owned in 1914, whereas foreign tonnage increased nearly 61 per cent. Britain’s percentage of 42 percent. of the world’s steam and motor tonnage in 1914 has now shrunk to under 31. Encouragement by the Italian Government is the most potent cause of the expansion of Italian shipbuilding. Liberal subsidies _of public money have been allotted to Italian lines carrying on services with North and South American ports, and with many otheroverseas countries, including Australia.
